Effect of tip clearance and rotor–stator axial gap on the efficiency of a multistage compressor

open access: yesApplied Thermal Engineering, 2016
International audienceMultistage compressor is the most important constituent of gas turbines used in land, naval and aeronautical applications. Overall performance of such machinery depends mainly on the axial compressor performance. Due to the relative

Research On The Application Of Similarity Principle For Multistage Axial Compressor

Proceedings of Global Power & Propulsion Society, 2022
Low-speed model fabrication is an effective testing method for deep understanding flow characteristics with low cost and low risk, so it is extensively used in design and optimization of high speed and small scale compressors. Reynolds number, Euler number and Strouhal number are demanded to retain constant for exact similarity method.

Reverse flow in multistage axial compressors

22nd Joint Propulsion Conference, 1986
This paper reports an experimental study of multistage axial compressor operation under reverse-flow conditions. The experiments were performed on a high hub-tip ratio, three-stage, low aspect ratio compressor. Unstalled and stalled performance characteristics are presented for two builds with different blade-stagger angles.

The Development of a Multistage Axial Compressor Research Facility

47th AIAA/ASME/SAE/ASEE Joint Propulsion Conference & Exhibit, 2011
Recent renovations to the Purdue 3-stage axial compressor research facility have led to improved inlet flow to the facility and expanded driveline capabilities. The original layout included a front-driven compressor, which led to challenges with uniformity of inlet air temperature and velocity profiles.

Unsteady Effects in Axial Compressors: A Multistage Simulation

Journal of Propulsion and Power, 2013
This work presents a numerical simulation of a four-stage axial compressor with cantilevered stators and repeating stages. Two simulations have been accomplished, namely, unsteady with sliding plane and steady with mixing plane, over a wide range of operating conditions.

The nature of wakes in multistage axial flow compressors

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part A: Journal of Power and Energy, 1999
This paper describes the measurement and processing of unsteady turbulence data from a multistage low-speed compressor. In this study, a two-element hot-wire probe was traversed along a circumferential path downstream of the third rotor row of a large-scale low-speed four-stage facility. Simultaneous circumferential and axial velocity measurements were

Axial Location of Casing Treatment in Multistage Axial Flow Compressors

Volume 6: Turbo Expo 2005, Parts A and B, 2005
Koch in Ref. 1 presented a procedure for estimating the maximum pressure rise potential of axial flow compressor stages. When used in conjunction with a stage stacking off-design performance prediction method, it can indicate which stage is likely to be responsible for stalling a multistage compressor.

Optimized Preliminary Design of a Multistage Low-Speed Axial FLow Compressor

2021 3rd Novel Intelligent and Leading Emerging Sciences Conference (NILES), 2021
This paper proposes a technique based on a MAT-LAB code capable of getting an optimized preliminary design of an efficient low-speed compressor qualified for laboratory experiments with relatively low cost. The code was made to design five repeated compressor stages on two steps conducted iteratively, namely “mean line and radial design” to determine ...

Full annulus simulation on a multistage axial-centrifugal combined compressor

Proceedings of Global Power & Propulsion Society, 2023
Axial-centrifugal combined compressors are widely used in small and medium aero-engines. This study aims to investigate the performance and flow characteristics of a multistage axial-centrifugal compressor using annulus unsteady simulation. The compressor comprises three axial stages and one radial stage, including the inlet and outlet guide vanes. The

Simulation of Surge Inception and Performance of Axial Multistage Compressor

Volume 6: Turbomachinery, Parts A and B, 2006
This work concerns transient multistage turbomachine modeling. The main application is the simulation of off-design regimes and unstable situations (essentially surge). Two specific approaches are developed: the first is a simple and fast model, based on a simplification of actuator disk model (0D).
