Using new econometric methods, we separately estimate average transaction costs, as a function of trade size, for over 167,000 bonds from a one-year sample of all U.S. municipal bond trades. Unlike in equities, municipal bond transaction costs decrease with trade size and do not depend significantly on trade frequency.

Earlier this year The Wall Street Journal ran an ad for a municipal bond product with the eye‐catching headline, “If you earn over $43,150, the IRS is taxing you like a millionaire!” The ad went on to say that if you are single and making over $43,150, you've made it to the top tax bracket and are being taxed at the same rate as the rich.
