Phenolic compounds from the peel of Musa cavendish, Musa acuminata and Musa cavandanaish

open access: yesRevista Politécnica, 2017
Abstract: Ecuador, one of the big banana exporters, produces approximately 240 000 tons of fruit that are notexported. This by-product generates a serious environmental problem due to its high organic load. Banana peel is asource of antioxidant compounds such as phenolic compounds.

Open letter: The need for a site‐based biodiversity standard measuring and certifying impacts from nature‐based projects

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Despite growing investment in restoration, weak accountability and poor biodiversity monitoring mean many projects fail to achieve ecological recovery. The Global Biodiversity Standard (TGBS) offers a practical way to ensure that restoration finance delivers measurable gains for nature.

Past, present and future of local crop evolution

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Promoting agrobiodiversity is a promising strategy for mitigating the negative effects of climate change on global food security. We highlight the central role evolutionary processes play in harnessing the potential of local crops by integrating genomics, archaeology, ethnobotany and traditional ecological knowledge (TEK).

Energy and carbon footprints of biofuel systems using banana and plantain waste [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Waste that accumulates in Musa production systems (up to 40% of total fruit biomass) has a great potential to be processed into bioethanol due to high sugar contents of fruits, and can open new energy sources and markets for small-scale banana and ...

Sustainable treatment of banana leaves for phytosanitary applications: impact, spreading, and impregnation of mineral oil

open access: yesPest Management Science, EarlyView.
Mineral oil droplets spread anisotropically, penetrate banana leaf tissues, and diffuse into the palisade parenchyma, revealing a delayed, Fickian mechanism that supports improved phytosanitary spray strategies. Abstract BACKGROUND Efficient application of phytosanitary sprays is essential for sustainable control of foliar fungal diseases such as Black
