Linear Predictive Coding for Acute Stress Prediction from Computer Mouse Movements [PDF]

open access: yes2021 43rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society (EMBC), 2020
Prior work demonstrated the potential of using the Linear Predictive Coding (LPC) filter to approximate muscle stiffness and damping from computer mouse movements to predict acute stress levels of users. Theoretically, muscle stiffness and damping in the arm can be estimated using a mass-spring-damper (MSD) biomechanical model.

Body composition associations with muscle strength in older adults living in Auckland, New Zealand.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2021
BackgroundAging is associated with decreases in muscle strength and simultaneous changes in body composition, including decreases in muscle mass, muscle quality and increases in adiposity.MethodsAdults (n = 369; 236 females) aged 65-74 years living ...

Sarcopenia: Assessment of Muscle Mass [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of Nutrition, 1997
Despite general information that skeletal muscle mass is the largest organ in the body and despite increased awareness of the importance of skeletal muscle in biological function, methods and techniques for its routine assessment in humans are generally lacking.

Increasing muscle mass to improve metabolism [PDF]

open access: yesAdipocyte, 2013
Skeletal muscle insulin resistance is a predictor of the development of type 2 diabetes and maintenance of adequate muscle glucose disposal in muscle may help to prevent diabetes. Lipodystrophy is a type of diabetes caused by a reduction of white adipose tissue and the adipokine leptin.

MuRF1/TRIM63, Master Regulator of Muscle Mass

open access: yesInternational Journal of Molecular Sciences, 2020
The E3 ubiquitin ligase MuRF1/TRIM63 was identified 20 years ago and suspected to play important roles during skeletal muscle atrophy. Since then, numerous studies have been conducted to decipher the roles, molecular mechanisms and regulation of this ...

Neuromuscular and Metabolic Responses during Repeated Bouts of Loaded Downhill Walking [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
The aim of this study was to compare vastus lateralis (VL) and rectus femoris (RF) muscles for their nervous and mechanical adaptations during two bouts of downhill walking (DW) with load carriage performed two weeks apart. Moreover, we investigated cardio-metabolic and perceived exertion responses during both DW bouts.

Serum transthyretin and aminotransferases are associated with lean mass in people with coronary heart disease: Further insights from the CARE-CR study

open access: yesFrontiers in Medicine, 2023
BackgroundLow muscle mass disproportionately affects people with coronary heart disease compared to healthy controls but is under-researched and insufficiently treated. Inflammation, poor nutrition, and neural decline might contribute to low muscle mass.

MSKdeX: Musculoskeletal (MSK) decomposition from an X-ray image for fine-grained estimation of lean muscle mass and muscle volume [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Musculoskeletal diseases such as sarcopenia and osteoporosis are major obstacles to health during aging. Although dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and computed tomography (CT) can be used to evaluate musculoskeletal conditions, frequent monitoring is difficult due to the cost and accessibility (as well as high radiation exposure in the case of CT)

Coronal X-Ray Emission from Nearby, Low-Mass, Exoplanet Host Stars Observed by the MUSCLES and Mega-MUSCLES HST Treasury Survey Projects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
The high energy X-ray and ultraviolet (UV) radiation fields of exoplanet host stars play a crucial role in controlling the atmospheric conditions and the potential habitability of exoplanets. Major surveys of the X-ray/UV emissions from late-type (K and M spectral type) exoplanet hosts have been conducted by the MUSCLES and Mega-MUSCLES Hubble Space ...

A systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression of the effect of protein supplementation on resistance training-induced gains in muscle mass and strength in healthy adults

open access: yesBritish Journal of Sports Medicine, 2017
Objective We performed a systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression to determine if dietary protein supplementation augments resistance exercise training (RET)-induced gains in muscle mass and strength.
