Muscle Dynamics, Size Principle, and Stability

IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering, 1984
A mathematical model of skeletal muscle activation during small or isometric movements is discussed with the following attributes. A direct relationship between the stimulus rate and the active state is established. A piecewise linear relation between the length of the contractile element and the isometric force is considered.

Human jaw muscle strength and size in relation to limb muscle strength and size

European Journal of Oral Sciences, 2004
The aim of the present study was to investigate to what extent general factors (e.g. genotype, hormones) and factors at the craniofacial level (e.g. craniofacial size, jaw muscle architecture) contribute to the size and strength of the jaw muscles. A strong relationship of jaw muscle size and strength with that of other muscles would argue for general ...

Skeletal muscle size: relationship to muscle function in heart failure

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1993
Abnormalities of skeletal muscle function and metabolism are common in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF) and appear to contribute to systemic exercise limitation. Although the mechanism for these differences is unclear, one possibility is skeletal muscle atrophy.

Size Principle of Striated Muscle Cells

Netherlands Journal of Zoology, 1997
We have investigated the relationship between cross-sectional area (CSA) and maximum rate of oxygen consumption (VO2max, in nmol .mm-3 .s-1) of heart and skeletal muscle cells from different species. VO2max and CSA were determined for single muscle fibres of Xenopus laevis at 20°C and for cardiomyocytes in thin trabeculae dissected from the right ...

Molecular Size of Hagfish Muscle Lactate Dehydrogenase

Science, 1967
In contrast to an earlier report, we find that the primitive vertebrate Eptatretus possesses a muscle lactate dehydrogenase whose molecular size is like that of lactate dehydrogenases from higher vertebrates. The molecular size of lactate dehydrogenase appears to have remained constant during evolution.

Skeletal muscle size distribution in large‐sized male and female athletes

American Journal of Human Biology, 2020
AbstractObjectiveIn healthy adults, it is generally accepted that women have less upper body muscle mass compared to men. However, it is unknown whether there are sex differences in skeletal muscle distribution in highly trained large‐sized athletes.

Does muscle size matter?

Disability and Rehabilitation, 2015
We note with interest the comments from Dr. Wiwanitkit [1] regarding our recent publication, “Muscle size and strength in children with Cerebral Palsy” [2], who makes several suggestions with regar...

Ultrasonographic assessment of human skeletal muscle size

European Journal of Applied Physiology, 2004
The measurement of human muscle size is essential when assessing the effects of training, disuse and ageing. The considered 'gold standard' for cross-sectional area measurements of muscle size is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). However, MRI is costly and often inaccessible.

Gluteal muscle function and size in swimmers

Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport, 2016
To compare the gluteus medius and minimus segments size and activity in swimmers versus non-swimmers.Case matched-control cross-sectional study. The three segments of gluteus medius (anterior, middle and posterior) and two segments of gluteus minimus (anterior and posterior) were evaluated using electromyography and magnetic resonance imaging in 15 ...

Does muscle size matter? The relationship between muscle size and strength in children with cerebral palsy

Disability and Rehabilitation, 2014
To investigate the muscle size-strength relationship of the knee flexors and extensors in children with spastic cerebral palsy (CP) in relation to typically developing children (TD).Eighteen children with spastic Diplegia, Gross Motor Function Classification System I-III (mean 7 y 5 mo SD 1 y 7 mo) and 19 TD children (mean 7 y 6 mo SD 1 y 9 mo ...
