Larger muscle fibers and fiber bundles manifest smaller elastic modulus in paraspinal muscles of rats and humans

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2021
The passive elastic modulus of muscle fiber appears to be size-dependent. The objectives of this study were to determine whether this size effect was evident in the mechanical testing of muscle fiber bundles and to examine whether the muscle fiber bundle

SNUPN‐Related Muscular Dystrophy: Novel Phenotypic, Pathological and Functional Protein Insights

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective SNUPN‐related muscular dystrophy or LGMDR29 is a new entity that covers from a congenital or childhood onset pure muscular dystrophy to more complex phenotypes combining neurodevelopmental features, cataracts, or spinocerebellar ataxia. So far, 12 different variants have been described.

Adaptable Tile‐Based Pneumatic Origami through Structurally Coupled Localized Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents tile‐based pneumatic origami structures with rigid tiles and flexible fabric creases, achieving adaptable properties including morphing shape, selective multistability, and tunable stiffness. Independently pressurized folding bladders at each crease enable structurally coupled localized actuation of origami structures.

3D (Bio) Printing Combined Fiber Fabrication Methods for Tissue Engineering Applications: Possibilities and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

Change in muscle thickness under contracting conditions following return to sports after a hamstring muscle strain injury—A pilot study

open access: yesAsia-Pacific Journal of Sports Medicine, Arthroscopy, Rehabilitation and Technology, 2015
The purpose of this study was to measure the change in hamstring muscle thickness between contracting and relaxing conditions following a return to sports after a hamstring muscle strain and thereby evaluate muscle function.

Micropatterned Biphasic Printed Electrodes for High‐Fidelity on‐Skin Bioelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Micropatterned biphasic printed electrodes achieve unprecedented skin conformity and low impedance by combining liquid‐metal droplets with microstructured 3D lattices. This scalable approach enables high‐fidelity detection of ECG, EMG, and EEG signals, including alpha rhythms from the forehead, with long‐term comfort and stability.

A Personalized Muscle–Tendon Assessment and Exercise Prescription Concept Reduces Muscle–Tendon Imbalances in Female Adolescent Athletes

open access: yesSports Medicine - Open
Background Imbalances between muscle strength and tendon stiffness influence the mechanical demand on the tendon (i.e., tendon strain) and may increase tendon injury risk.

Patterning the Void: Combining L‐Systems with Archimedean Tessellations as a Perspective for Tissue Engineering Scaffolds

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces a novel multi‐scale scaffold design using L‐fractals arranged in Archimedean tessellations for tissue regeneration. Despite similar porosity, tiles display vastly different tensile responses (1–100 MPa) and deformation modes. In vitro experiments with hMSCs show geometry‐dependent growth and activity. Over 55 000 tile combinations
