Structural biology of ferritin nanocages

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Ferritin is a conserved iron‐storage protein that sequesters iron as a ferric mineral core within a nanocage, protecting cells from oxidative damage and maintaining iron homeostasis. This review discusses ferritin biology, structure, and function, and highlights recent cryo‐EM studies revealing mechanisms of ferritinophagy, cellular iron uptake, and ...

Kind of Black: The Musicians' Labour Market in Italy [PDF]

open access: yes
It is estimated that only 5% of musicians in Italy are regularly employed. In an attempt at understanding such a peculiar situation, we build a theoretical model of the musicians’ labour market in which we embed the main institutional features of the ...

The Anxious Musician: Coping Strategies Used to Combat Music Performance Anxiety [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Music Performance Anxiety, or MPA, affects over 20% of musicians, regardless of age, experience, or nationality. MPA is a form of social anxiety that causes the performer great distress before and during a performance experience, often causing the ...

Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Prevalence of musculoskeletal disorders in symphonic orchestra’s musicians: A cross-sectional study in Italy [PDF]

open access: yesGIornale Italiano di Psicologia e Medicina del Lavoro
Introduction: This study aims to investigate the incidence and characteristics of musculoskeletal disorders among professional musicians, exploring the correlations between the use of different musical instruments and the onset of such pathologies ...

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Movement induced tremor in musicians and non-musicians reflects adaptive brain plasticity

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2014
Evidence exists that motor dexterity is associated with a higher tremor amplitude of physiological tremor. Likewise, lower frequencies are associated with motor control.

Hail, Trombones and Liszt [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
As the music department moved into its new digs in the Vivian A. Bull Music Center, musicians carried with them more than just instruments, sheet music and tuning forks.

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...
