Resolving the ambiguities in the identification of two smooth-hound sharks (Mustelus mustelus and Mustelus punctulatus) using genetics and morphology

open access: yesMarine Biodiversity, 2017
Elasmobranch species are among the most threatened marine fish, and sound biological data for many of them are lacking. In this context, the smooth-hounds (Mustelus spp., Triakidae, Carcharhiniformes) represent an intriguing genus, being characterized by unclear and sometimes contrasting diagnostic traits.

Diet composition of blackspotted smooth-hound, Mustelus punctulatus (Risso, 1826), in the eastern Adriatic Sea

Journal of Applied Ichthyology, 2007
The purpose of the present study was to provide a qualitative and quantitative description of the diet and length-weight relationship (LWR)of the blackspotted smooth-hound in the eastern Adriatic Sea. Samples of blackspotted smooth-hound were taken from four localities in the eastern Adriatic at depths from 70 and 160 m.A total of 145 specimens were ...

Morphological and molecular identification of Mustelus mustelus and Mustelus punctulatus

open access: yes, 2012
Mustelus is the most species-rich genus of the widespread family Triakidae and represents a significant fraction of the elasmobranch catch in the northern Adriatic Sea where the common (M. mustelus) and blackspotted (M. punctulatus) smooth-hound co-occur.

Age estimation of the common smooth-hound Mustelus mustelus and the blackspotted smooth-hound Mustelus punctulatus (Chondrichthyes: Triakidae) in the Northern Adriatic Sea

open access: yes
The common smooth-hound (Mustelus mustelus) and the blackspotted smoothhound (Mustelus punctulatus) are among the most heavily exploited commercial shark species in the Mediterranean Sea. These species exhibit K-selected lifehistory traits, characterized by slow growth, late maturity, and low reproductive rates, which make them particularly susceptible

Contrasting life‐history traits of two sympatric smooth‐hound species: implication for vulnerability

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, 2020
In this study, life-history traits (maximum and average size, size at maturity and fecundity) of two congeneric smooth-hounds, Mustelus mustelus and Mustelus punctulatus, which share a geographical distribution and experience a similar fishing ...

A century of fishery data documenting the collapse of smooth‐hounds (Mustelus spp.) in the Mediterranean Sea

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, 2017
Conservation and management of shark populations is increasingly becoming important in many marine regions, since there is a growing body of evidence showing that several species are threatened and continuing to decline because of unregulated fishing ...

Life –history traits of a Blackspotted smooth‐ hound (Mustelus punctulatus) in the northern and central Adriatic Sea

2015
Blackspotted smooth‐hound (Mustelus punctulatus Risso, 1827) is frequently recorded and commercially exploited demersal shark, classified by IUCN Red List as Data Deficient. We used histological and morphometrical techniques on reproductive organs and vertebrae to analyse demographic and reproductive traits of blackspotted smooth‐hound.

Preliminary data on the feeding of Mustelus mustelus (L.) and Mustelus punctulatus Risso (Chondrishthies: Triakoidae) in the Adriatic Sea

1999
Feeding habits of species Mustelus mustelus and M. punctulatus are investigated. 58 stomachs of M. punctulatus (TL = 69.5 - 111.3 cm), of which 50 (86.2 percent) stomachs contained food, and 49 stomachs of M. mustelus (TL = 70.5 - 135.7 cm), of which 42 (85.7 percent) stomachs contained food, were investigated.

Trace element concentration and toxicity in blackspotted smooth-hound sharks (Mustelus punctulatus) from the southern Adriatic Sea: Implications for consumer safety

Marine Pollution Bulletin
Sharks are highly susceptible to heavy metals and metalloids bioaccumulation due to their high trophic position within marine ecosystems. However, heavy metal(oid)s concentration have been reported for few species, and their biological effects remain poorly understood.
