Nontuberculous Mycobacteria Isolation from Clinical and Environmental Samples in Iran: Twenty Years of Surveillance

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are opportunistic pathogens that are widely distributed in the environment. There is a lack of data on species distribution of these organisms from Iran. This study consists of a review of NTM articles published in Iran between the years 1992 and 2014.

General Overview on Nontuberculous Mycobacteria, Biofilms, and Human Infection

open access: yesJournal of Pathogens, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are emergent pathogens whose importance in human health has been growing. After being regarded mainly as etiological agents of opportunist infections in HIV patients, they have also been recognized as etiological agents of several infections on immune‐competent individuals and healthcare‐associated infections.

Altered T Lymphocytes Mitochondrial Function and Inflammatory Factors of Peripheral Blood in HIV Patients With Mycobacterial Infection

open access: yesJournal of Cellular and Molecular Medicine, Volume 29, Issue 17, September 2025.
ABSTRACT To characterise T‐cell immunity and inflammatory profiles in HIV patients with mycobacterial co‐infections. This study enrolled 41 HIV patients co‐infected with Mycobacterium tuberculosis (HIV‐TB, n = 27) or non‐tuberculous mycobacteria (HIV‐NTM, n = 14), along with 30 controls (20 HIV‐monoinfected, 10 post‐treatment) from a single centre ...

Assessment of the BD MGIT TBc Identification Test for the Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex in a Network of Mycobacteriology Laboratories

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
We evaluate the performance of the TBcID assay in a panel of 100 acid‐fast bacilli cultures. Sixty‐four isolates were TBcID positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), whereas 36 gave negative results. These included 28 nontuberculous mycobacteria, one nonmycobacterial isolate, one M. tuberculosis, and six M. bovis BCG strains.

Hyperammonemia in Generalized Mycobacterium genavense Infection after Renal Transplantation [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Transplantation, 2007
After solid organ transplantation, patients are susceptible to infection caused by uncommon pathogens due the immunosuppressive drug therapy. Here, we report the first case of disseminated Mycobacterium genavense infection in a HIV seronegative renal transplant patient. The most striking clinical feature was a decreased consciousness.

The Study of Microbial Physiology Under Microoxic Conditions Is Critical but Neglected

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 3, June 2025.
Microbial physiology is mainly studied under aerobic or anaerobic/anoxic conditions, neglecting microbial behaviours in diverse microoxic conditions. The current article revisits the definition of microoxia in light of recent developments in oxygen‐sensing technology and emphasises the need to understand microbial physiology and growth behaviours of ...

Experimental Inoculation of BFDV‐Positive Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) with Two Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium Isolates

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
Beak and feather disease virus‐ (BFDV‐) positive (naturally infected) but clinically healthy budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) were inoculated with two isolates of Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium isolated from naturally infected golden pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) and peafowl (Pavo cristatus).

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria in Guadeloupe, Martinique, and French Guiana from 1994 to 2012

open access: yesTuberculosis Research and Treatment, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous environmental organisms able to cause severe opportunistic human infections. Their distribution patterns are subject to geographical variations. This study describes their isolation frequencies from clinical specimen in the three French overseas departments of the Americas, namely, Guadeloupe, Martinique,

Klatskin‐Like Lesions

open access: yesHPB Surgery, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Hilar cholangiocarcinoma, also known as Klatskin tumour, is the commonest type of cholangiocarcinoma. It poses unique problems in the diagnosis and management because of its anatomical location. Curative surgery in the form of major hepatic resection entails significant morbidity. About 5–15% of specimens resected for presumed Klatskin tumour prove not

Delayed diagnosis of disseminated mycobacterium genavense infection in a human immunodeficiency virus-negative young woman

open access: yes, 2011
We report here a case of Mycobacterium genavense-disseminated infection in a human immunodeficiency virus-negative young patient under immunosuppressive treatment for autoimmune chronic hepatitis type I. The diagnosis was achieved thanks to the detection
