Assessment of the BD MGIT TBc Identification Test for the Detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex in a Network of Mycobacteriology Laboratories

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
We evaluate the performance of the TBcID assay in a panel of 100 acid‐fast bacilli cultures. Sixty‐four isolates were TBcID positive for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC), whereas 36 gave negative results. These included 28 nontuberculous mycobacteria, one nonmycobacterial isolate, one M. tuberculosis, and six M. bovis BCG strains.

The Study of Microbial Physiology Under Microoxic Conditions Is Critical but Neglected

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 17, Issue 3, June 2025.
Microbial physiology is mainly studied under aerobic or anaerobic/anoxic conditions, neglecting microbial behaviours in diverse microoxic conditions. The current article revisits the definition of microoxia in light of recent developments in oxygen‐sensing technology and emphasises the need to understand microbial physiology and growth behaviours of ...

Growth-Deficient Mycobacteria in Patients with AIDS: Diagnosis by Analysis of DNA Amplified from Blood or Tissue [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Amplification and sequencing of mycobacterial ribosomal RNA genes (16S rDNA) may permit the detection of growth-deficient species (i.e., those exhibiting no growth or those whose growth is delayed for more than 12 weeks).

Experimental Inoculation of BFDV‐Positive Budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) with Two Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium Isolates

open access: yesBioMed Research International, Volume 2014, Issue 1, 2014., 2014
Beak and feather disease virus‐ (BFDV‐) positive (naturally infected) but clinically healthy budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus) were inoculated with two isolates of Mycobacterium avium subsp. avium isolated from naturally infected golden pheasant (Chrysolophus pictus) and peafowl (Pavo cristatus).

Nontuberculous Mycobacteria in Guadeloupe, Martinique, and French Guiana from 1994 to 2012

open access: yesTuberculosis Research and Treatment, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous environmental organisms able to cause severe opportunistic human infections. Their distribution patterns are subject to geographical variations. This study describes their isolation frequencies from clinical specimen in the three French overseas departments of the Americas, namely, Guadeloupe, Martinique,

Klatskin‐Like Lesions

open access: yesHPB Surgery, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
Hilar cholangiocarcinoma, also known as Klatskin tumour, is the commonest type of cholangiocarcinoma. It poses unique problems in the diagnosis and management because of its anatomical location. Curative surgery in the form of major hepatic resection entails significant morbidity. About 5–15% of specimens resected for presumed Klatskin tumour prove not

Dapsone/Pyrimethamine May Prevent Mycobacterial Disease in Immunosuppressed Patients Infected with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Dapsone exhibits activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) in vitro. We retrospectively examined the incidence of mycobacterial diseases within a randomized prospective trial of prophylaxis for Pneumocystis carinii
