Clinics in Laboratory Medicine, 1989
Seven different mycoplasmas have been isolated from the human genitourinary tract. The diseases they cause or with which they have been associated are described. Diagnosis of infection by cultural and noncultural (antigen detection, DNA probes) methods is discussed in detail. The more useful serologic procedures are included as well.

Cytokines in Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections
Cytokine & Growth Factor Reviews, 2004Mycoplasma pneumoniae (M. pneumoniae) is one of the smallest free-living bacteria known. Along with other unique characteristics of this genus, it lacks the typical peptidoglycan cell wall of most eubacteria. Best known for causing tracheobronchitis and atypical pneumonia in humans, this pathogen also causes a number of extrapulmonary syndromes such as

Infections associated with genital Mycoplasma
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, 1973Abstract Eleven case reports are presented in order to illustrate the part that genital Mycoplasma (M.) may play in human disease. Three cases were of pelvic inflammatory disease and T strain M. was isolated from the exudate in one and M. hominis in 2 cases. In four cases Mycoplasma was isolated from purulent postoperative wounds.

Avian mycoplasma infections: Prototype of mixed infections with mycoplasmas, bacteria and viruses
Annales de l'Institut Pasteur / Microbiologie, 1984Mixed infections involving mycoplasmas, viruses and bacteria are well recognized in chickens. Synergism has been demonstrated between Mycoplasma gallisepticum and the viruses of Newcastle disease and infectious bronchitis and Escherichia coli, although the outcome of infection is influenced by many factors associated with the host and the organisms ...

Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infection
Archives of Internal Medicine, 1980To the Editor. —We have continued to be impressed with the diverse clinical syndromes with which Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection may be associated. 1 The following case depicts an unusual presentation for M pneumoniae pneumonia. Three weeks before admission to the hospital, a 40-year-old woman had six teeth extracted under general anesthesia without ...

Vesiculopustular Eruption With Mycoplasma Infection
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1970A widespread vesiculopustular eruption, initially resembling chickenpox, but evolving differently, associated with a febrile upper-respiratory tract illness which lasted two weeks developed in a 27-year-old man. A 16-fold rise in complement-fixation titer for Mycoplasma pneumoniae between the seventh and 15th day of his illness suggested the cause of ...

Mycoplasma pneumoniae Infections in Childhood
Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, 2014sible for up to 40% of community-acquired pneumonias in children over 5 years of age. Community-acquired pneumonias due to M. pneumoniae may increase several fold dur ing epidemics that occur every 4–7 years, believed to be due to waning of herd immunity and introduction of new subtypes into the population.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections andexanthems
The Journal of Pediatrics, 1975A review of the medical literature and two case reports of M. pneumoniae infections with exanthems are presented. Erythematous maculopapular and vesicular exanthems were most common. The duration of rash was more than seven days in the majority of instances, and most patients had associated pneumonia.

Mycoplasmas comprise a large group of microorganisms consisting of 180 species, which can be found in nature as parasites in reptiles, plants, mammals, and humans. Since 1990, with the development of sensitive and specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a significant number of publications have shown a strong association between mycoplasmas and ...
