Myocytes, Myometrium, and Uterine Contractions

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2006
Abstract:  The pregnant uterus is unique because of the dramatic functional changes that occur in the peripartum period. To promote the concept that we have a relatively poor understanding of the physiology of parturition, we will posit 10 facts that are so obvious and so clearly accepted as facts that they probably are not even facts at all.

Metabolism of Progesterone in Human Myometrium

Endocrinology, 1969
In vitro incubation experiments with human myometrium collected during the proliferative phase of the ovarian cycle demonstrate progesterone-4-14C to be metabolized to 5 products, namely, pregn-4-en-20α-ol-3-one, 5α-pregnan-3,20-dione, pregn-4-en,6β-ol-3,20-dione, 5α-pregnan-20α-ol-3-one, and an unidentified product. The rate of progesterone metabolism

[Myometrium diseases].

Journal de radiologie, 2002
Leiomyoma and adenomyosis are the most frequent myometrial disorders, followed by cystic and vascular disorders. After an update on the anatomy, physiology and histology of the myometrium, the authors will describe the normal sonographic and MRI aspects of the uterus.

Nitric oxide and the myometrium

Pharmacology & Therapeutics, 1996
Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent smooth muscle relaxant in blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract and the respiratory system. Recent evidence has shown that NO has a relaxant (tocolytic) effect on myometrium. NO is produced within the female genital tract during pregnancy, and a reduction in NO synthesis may be involved in the initiation of parturition.

Erkrankungen des Myometriums

2012

Ultrastructure of the Myometrium

1989
The concept that a well-developed appreciation of structure is an essential prerequisite to an understanding of function permeates research into all physical processes but is especially true for the biological sciences. The electron microscopic and x-ray diffraction studies conducted on the myometrium during the past 25 years have provided important ...

Myometrium: Smooth Muscle Neoplasms

1983
These tumours are so ubiquitous and well known that their general features require little comment. Histologically, they consist of fusiform smooth muscle cells with abundant eosinophilic cytoplasm and elongated, blunt-ended or tapering, nuclei which are arranged in bundles and whorls (Figure 18.1), the bundles often intersecting at right angles to each

Biochemistry of the Myometrium

1977
In this consideration of the Biochemistry of the myometrium, we shall be concerned mainly with its contractile function. The uterus is an organ specialized, on the one hand, for the reception of the ovum by the endometrium and the continuous nourishment of the developing fetus and, on the other hand, for its expulsion, by means of the strong isometric ...

Ultrasound Evaluation of Myometrium

2017
This chapter focuses on the uterine myometrium. The first part of the chapter deals with the systematic and standardised evaluation and reporting of myometrial pathology primarily based on the recent MUSA consensus statement. Standardising terminologies, definitions and methodology of evaluation is important so that sonologists worldwide speak the same
