Network formation of tissue cells via preferential attraction to elongated structures

open access: yes, 2006
Vascular and non-vascular cells often form an interconnected network in vitro, similar to the early vascular bed of warm blooded embryos. Our time-lapse recordings show that the network forms by extending sprouts, i.e., multicellular linear segments.

Monitoring of Water Quality for Reduced Water Use in a Partial Recirculating Aquaculture System

open access: yesAquaculture, Fish and Fisheries, Volume 5, Issue 3, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Partial recirculating aquaculture systems (PRASs) aim for combining the benefits of flow‐through systems (water use of approximately 50,000 L kg−1 feed) and recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs, 500–1000 L kg−1 feed). While water quality is usually excellent in flow‐through systems, large volumes of water of good quality are required.

A dynamical systems approach to actin-based motility in Listeria monocytogenes

open access: yes, 2010
A simple kinematic model for the trajectories of Listeria monocytogenes is generalized to a dynamical system rich enough to exhibit the resonant Hopf bifurcation structure of excitable media and simple enough to be studied geometrically.

Force and Flexibility of Flailing Myxobacteria [PDF]

open access: yesBiophysical Journal, 2005
Myxococcus xanthus is a common Gram-negative bacterium that moves by a process called gliding motility. In myxobacteria, two distinct mechanisms for gliding have been discovered. S-type motility requires the extension, attachment, and retraction of type IV pili.

Discovery and In Vitro Reconstitution of Closoxazole Biosynthesis from Pyxidicoccus fallax

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 26, Issue 10, May 27, 2025.
The myxobacterium Pyxidicoccus fallax is found to be a producer of benzoxazole‐containing natural products named closoxazoles. In vitro studies with the biosynthetic enzymes reveal new insights into the reaction mechanism for closoxazole formation.

Suppression of predominant interfering bacteria in the purification process of myxobacteria

open access: yesIranian Journal of Microbiology, 2022
Background and Objectives: Myxobacteria initially recognized by their complex life cycle and social behavior are progressively explored for their bioactive secondary metabolites. However, isolation of myxobacteria usually is accompanied by bacterial and

The Biarylitides: Understanding the Structure and Biosynthesis of a Fascinating Class of Cytochrome P450 Modified RiPP Natural Products

open access: yesChemBioChem, Volume 26, Issue 7, April 1, 2025.
The biarylitides are fascinating RiPP natural products with small core peptides and diverse peptide crosslinks performed by cytochrome P450 enzymes. Here, we address the discovery and diversity of the biarylitides, methods to analyse these constrained cyclic peptides, the structures of the biarylitide P450 enzymes and address alternate catalytic ...

Long-range nematic order and anomalous fluctuations in suspensions of swimming filamentous bacteria [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We study the collective dynamics of elongated swimmers in a very thin fluid layer by devising long, filamentous, non-tumbling bacteria. The strong confinement induces weak nematic alignment upon collision, which, for large enough density of cells, gives ...
