Forest edges support a unique biodiversity distinct from the inner part of the forest. While species diversity of plants and animals were widely reported along forest edges, little is known about its microbiota, particularly myxomycetes.

Allorecognition behavior of slime mold plasmodium—Physarum rigidum slime sheath-mediated self-extension model [PDF]
When allogeneic plasmodia of Myxomycetes encounter each other, they fuse or avoid each other depending on the combination, indicating that plasmodia can recognize self and non-self.

FIBRILLAR DIFFERENTIATION IN MYXOMYCETE PLASMODIA [PDF]
Myxomycete plasmodia of four different types (not including Physarum polycephalum) were studied in thin sections viewed in the electron microscope. In the cytoplasm of the protoplasmodia of Clastoderma debaryanum and the phaneroplasmodia of Fuligo septica fixed in situ, fibrillar differentiations of three rather distinct kinds were observed.

Evolution of size and pattern in the social amoebas [PDF]
A fundamental goal of biology is to understand how novel phenotypes evolved through changes in existing genes. The Dictyostelia or social amoebas represent a simple form of multicellularity, where starving cells aggregate to build fruiting structures ...

Structural color in Myxomycetes
In this paper we report evidence of structural color in Myxomycetes, a group of eukaryotic microorganisms with an uncertain taxonomic position. We investigated the Diachea leucopoda, which belongs to the Physarales order, Myxomycetes class, and found that its peridium -protective layer that encloses the mass of spores- is basically a corrugated layer ...
