ABSTRACT Maternal obesity increases the risk of obesity and metabolic disease in the offspring, yet the cellular mechanisms that program adipose tissue development remain poorly understood. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), the precursors of adipocytes, may represent an early target of metabolic programming during fetal development.

This study investigates the genetic structure of Mazzaella laminarioides, an ecologically and economically important species from the rocky coast of Chile. Using more accurate sampling and a set of microsatellite, nuclear, and mitochondrial markers, we were able to identify with high resolution the contact zones between the previously described ...

Using a species‐level metabarcoding protocol specific for Arcellinida testate amoebae, we explored the diversity of this mainly freshwater group of protists in saline lakes. We found a large amount of novel diversity, multiple independent transitions across the salinity barrier, and some clades formed and found in athalassohaline lakes, indicating ...

Studying evolutionary processes in the unique and understudied Patagonian fjord ecosystem is a challenging task for evolutionary ecologists. Genomic signals of local adaptation are present in a species from northern Chilean Patagonia. Polygenic selection drives local adaptation in Eleginops maclovinus. ABSTRACT Understanding the evolutionary mechanisms

Protein evolution usually lies on mutations at disordered domains to promote novel functions and regulations. Here it is demonstrated that this is the case of ANP32A and ANP32B, two paralogs with apparently similar structures and functions, where a single amino‐acid substitution in the disordered domain triggers the extended‐to‐compact conformational ...

On the flanks of > 6000 m Andean volcanoes that tower over the Atacama Desert, leaf‐eared mice (Phyllotis vaccarum) live at extreme elevations that surpass known vegetation limits. We used a combination of metagenomics, DNA metabarcoding, and stable isotope analyses to investigate the diet of mice living in these extreme environments.
