6.12 Detection, Purification, and Synthesis of n-acylhomoserine Lactone Quorum Sensing Signal Molecules

1998
Publisher Summary This chapter describes the most relevant practical approaches for the identification and characterization of the N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHL) family of quorum sensing signal molecules. The first indication of AHL-mediated gene regulation in a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen is the appearance of a specific phenotype in a cell ...

Facile preparation of deuterium-labeled N-acylhomoserine lactones as internal standards for isotope dilution mass spectrometry

Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, 2010
N-Acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs) are widely conserved signal molecules that mediate quorum sensing in Gram-negative bacteria. In this study, deuterium-labeled AHLs were prepared for use as internal standards for isotope dilution mass spectrometry. Their utility in the sensitive and precise quantification of AHLs in culture supernatants of bacteria by ...

Distribution and characterization of N-acylhomoserine lactone (AHL)-degrading activity and AHL lactonase gene (qsdS) in Sphingopyxis

Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering, 2019
N-Acylhomoserine lactone (AHL)-degrading enzyme is identified from the various environments and applied for quorum-sensing inhibition. In this study, we isolated two AHL-degrading strains, Sphingopyxis sp. EG6 and FD7, from the industrial cooling water samples.

Cell aggregation is negatively regulated by N-acylhomoserine lactone-mediated quorum sensing in Pantoea ananatis SK-1

Journal of Bioscience and Bioengineering, 2011
Pantoea ananatis SK-1 produces N-acylhomoserine lactones (AHLs) and regulates expression of some virulence factors through AHL-mediated quorum sensing. In this study, we discovered that the strain SK-02I, which has a disrupted AHL-synthetic gene, showed constitutive cell aggregation.
