We describe four challenging N-body test problems involving the Sun and planets and use them to compare the performance of nine nonsymplectic and two symplectic integrators. Each problem has a long interval of integration and two have non-Newtonian gravitational interactions.

Simulated Annealing for N-body systems
1994In this paper we discuss the mapping of the physical problem of 2D crystallization with spherical boundary conditions onto a Simulated Annealing model, and the mapping of this model onto a parallel computer. We discuss some aspects of the finetuning of the simulation code and the overall behaviour, stability and scalability, of our parallel ...

Gravitational N-Body Simulations
2003This book discusses in detail all the relevant numerical methods for the classical N-body problem. It demonstrates how to develop clear and elegant algorithms for models of gravitational systems, and explains the fundamental mathematical tools needed to describe the dynamics of a large number of mutually attractive particles.

Prototyping N-body simulation in Proteus
Proceedings Sixth International Parallel Processing Symposium, 2003This paper explores the use of Proteus, an architecture-independent language suitable for prototyping parallel and distributed programs. Proteus is a high-level imperative notation based on sets and sequences with a single construct for the parallel composition of processes communicating through shared memory.

N-Body Simulations with GADGET-2
2013 15th International Symposium on Symbolic and Numeric Algorithms for Scientific Computing, 2013In this paper we discuss cosmological N-Body/SPH simulations on parallel computing systems with distributed memory using GADGET-2. GADGET-2 (GAlaxies with Dark matter and Gas intEracT) is a novel cosmological simulation code, written in C++ and publicly available, developed by Volker Springel at the Max-Planck-Institute for Astrophysics in Munchen ...

N-Body Simulations of Moon Accretion
2001We review the dynamical processes in accretion of the Moon from an impact-generated disk, based on the results of direct N-body simulations. The important processes are tidal inhibition of accretion within the Roche limit, development of density spiral arms, radial migration of disk mass associated with angular momentum transfer by the spiral arms ...

Direct N-body simulation on supercomputers
2007We have analyzed the effect of vectorization on several schemes of direct N-body integration. We find that an Aarseth-type code with a neighbour scheme, which is the fastest on a scalar processor, is still the fastest on vector processors for large N. For N=1000, the overall gain in speed is found to be a factor of 10 both in theory and experiment.
