Few drugs in current use have enjoyed such long-standing and widespread popularity as nitrous oxide. Introduced to medicine in the 1840s amid bitter controversy about whom to credit with the discovery of anesthesia, this ubiquitous agent is once again generating heated discussions.

Formation of N2O− via Ion–Molecule Reactions in N2O
The Journal of Chemical Physics, 1969The production of O−, NO− and N2O− by electron impact on N2O has been studied as a function of pressure in the range 10−6 to 5 × 10−3 torr, using a quadrupole mass filter. The respective linear, quadratic, and cubic pressure dependences observed for these ions and their relative signals are consistent with the following reaction sequence and cross ...

Vibrational Relaxation in N2O - H2O and N2O - D2O Mixtures
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1956Ultrasonic absorption measurements were made to compare the relative effectiveness of H2O and D2O molecules in influencing thermal vibrational relaxation in N2O molecules. The displacement rates of the absorption per wavelength maxima induced by H2O and D2O were compared in N2O - H2O and N2O - D2O mixtures.

Mites reduce microbial N2O emissions
Nature Reviews Microbiology, 2021This study reveals that mites reduce emission of nitrous oxide (N2O) from soil by feeding on N2O-producing fungi, so modulating mite abundance might represent a way to mitigate anthropogenic N2O emissions in agriculture.

This study reported for the first time that hyperthermophilic composting (HTC) could mitigate 90% of the cumulative amount of N2O emissions compared to traditional composting (TC) in a full-scale experiment. The concentrations of NO2--N and NO3--N in HTC were significantly lower than those in TC, which may be the main reason for the reduced N2O ...

Contribution of dissolved N2O in total N2O emission from sewage treatment plant
Chemosphere, 2018The characteristics of nitrous oxide, N2O, from a sewage treatment plant, which conducts nitrogen removal, and the river that receives its effluent water, were investigated by intensive daily surveys in summer and winter. N2O production in the sewage treatment plant was promoted in winter when nitrite accumulated in the reaction tank. The dissolved N2O

Nitrous oxide or laughing gas (N2O) is produced both naturally and artificially. This greenhouse gas is produced and consumed by biological processes in soil and water and is removed from the atmosphere much more slowly than methane. The yearly growth in the N2O emission trend varied from 0.1% at the beginning of this century to 1.3% in the last 10 ...

Emissions of Nitrous Oxide (N2O)
1994Estimates on present and future nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions are compared with environmentally desirable levels. Worldwide, about 13 Tg N2O-N is emitted annually at present. About one-third of these emissions are anthropogenic. Since anthropogenic N2O emissions are largely associated with food production, it seems likely that global emissions will ...
