Cognitive representations underlying the N400 priming effect

Cognitive Brain Research, 2001
The present study explored whether the N400 semantic priming effect is based on semantic similarity or lexical associations, or both. The event-related potentials showed N400 priming effects for both semantically similar and lexically associated word pairs in the 250-375 ms time-window.

The N400 reflects problems of thematic hierarchizing

Neuroreport, 2001
Using event-related potentials (ERPs), we present evidence that the current interpretation of the N400 component must be extended. This component is elicited in incorrect German sentences with two grammatical subjects, thereby showing its sensitivity to thematic relations between arguments in a sentence (who is doing what to whom).

Negation and the N400: investigating temporal aspects of negation integration using semantic and world-knowledge violations

Language, Cognition and Neuroscience, 2018
Negation comprehension is a time-consuming, resource demanding process. This study investigates whether additional time to process the negation operator eases negation integration.

P300, N400, aerobic fitness, and maximal aerobic exercise

Psychophysiology, 2000
Electrophysiological effects of aerobic fitness and maximal aerobic exercise were investigated by comparing P300 and N400 before and after a maximal cycling test. Event‐related potentials (ERPs) were obtained from 20 students divided into two matched groups defined by their aerobic fitness level (cyclists vs. sedentary subjects).

Focusing on the N400: An exploration of selective attention during reading

Psychophysiology, 1994
AbstractIn a series of two experiments, subjects read sentences wherein words were flanked in the lower visual field by irrelevant words (i.e., flankers). The visual angle between the words in the sentence and the flanker words was manipulated (i.e., 0.57°, 0.97°, 1.37°).

N400 involvement in the processing of action sequences

Neuroscience Letters, 2008
Understanding others' sequences of action is a fundamental aspect of human movement and is the key to detecting goal directed behavior and intentional actions. Human action contains semantic information whereby logical chains of events are entirely dependent on the sequence in which they are performed.

Language functions in schizophrenia and N400 [Şizofrenide dil i?şlevleri ve N400]

2002
One of the most prominent clinical features of schizophrenia is impaired language function. Clinical studies of schizophrenia have identified poverty of content, tangentiality, distractable speech, derailment, and incoherence as features of schizophrenic language.

The N400 potential could index a semantic inhibition

Brain Research Reviews, 2007
In this theoretical study, I briefly review some of the first hypotheses as to the functional significance of the N400 potential. I then summarize the view that the amplitude of the N400 is proportional to difficulty and indexes the efforts deployed by the brain to integrate the meaning of a stimulus in its context.
