8. Deformation and Mechanical Strength of Sediments at the Nankai Subduction Zone

2007
As in many depositional settings, marine sediments at convergent margins undergo diagenetic changes before, during, and after mechanical consolidation and deformation.

Imaging of the subducted Kyushu-Palau Ridge in the Hyuga-nada region, western Nankai Trough subduction zone

Tectonophysics, 2013
Abstract We performed 3D seismic tomography of the Hyuga-nada region, western Nankai subduction zone, to investigate the relationship of the subducted part of Kyushu-Palau Ridge (KPR) to coseismic rupture propagation, seismicity, and shallow very low frequency earthquakes.

Waveform Tomography Imaging of Deep Crustal Faults - Application to Nankai Subduction Zone

Proceedings, 2011
In many areas the geological interpretation of seismic images can benefit from quantitative, high resolution velocity images. Waveform Tomography can yield the appropriate images provided the input data contain large offsets and low frequencies, such as those available from a suite of Ocean Bottom Seismographs (OBSs).

Locating boundaries between locked and creeping regions at Nankai and Cascadia subduction zones

Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth
Interseismic coupling maps and, especially, estimates of the location of the fully coupled (locked) zone relative to the trench, coastline, and slow slip events are crucial for determining megathrust earthquake hazard at subduction zones. We present a physically motivated interseismic coupling inversion that explicitly incorporates locked zones with ...

Sediment strength contrasts and decollement localization in Nankai subduction zone

2010
We experimentally characterized the mechanical properties of marine sediments entering the Nankai Trough subduction zone (southwestern convergent margin of Japan). The mechanical tests, based on the independent application of isotropic confining Pc and pore pressure Pp, aimed at assessing both the poroelastic compressibility as well as the resistance ...

The slip deficit rate, slow and fast earthquake at the Nankai subduction zone.

2023
The Nankai subduction zone is considered as a region with a high seismic risk. Large earthquakes with magnitudes larger than 8 have occurred and will recur in the future. Additionally, several observations of slow earthquakes at the shallow and deep plate interface have continuously been being happening.

Effects of fluid circulation in subducting crust on Nankai margin seismogenic zone temperatures

Geology, 2008
Vigorous fluid circulation maintained in newly subducted ocean crust significantly affects subduction zone temperatures on the Nankai margin, Japan. The shallow part of the igneous ocean crust is pervasively fractured and thus highly permeable, allowing vigorous hydro thermal circulation.
