Frozen and Scorched: Genomic Signatures of Adaptive Divergence and Hibernation in the Living Fossil Dromiciops

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
We evaluated adaptation to torpor and hibernation in the genus Dromiciops by comparing it with both torpid and non‐torpid marsupials, and investigated divergent selection signals between its two species. For the ancestral node, we identified positive selection in the genes PFKFB2, LAMP3, OTX1, and RAPSN, alongside an enrichment of pathways potentially ...

What do We Mean by Environmental Heterogeneity? Toward A Mechanistically Explicit and Scale‐Dependent Framework

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
We synthesized 360 studies on environmental heterogeneity (EH) across taxa, regions, and disciplines. Only 10% of studies explicitly defined EH, and definitions were predominantly descriptive. We identify four operational interpretations of EH and propose a Research Roadmap linking EH metrics to five mechanistic hypotheses with testable predictions ...

Morphodynamic adjustment in a watershed affected by megafires: Deadman River, British Columbia, Canada

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 8, August 2026.
The Deadman River watershed (British Columbia, Canada) was severely impacted by the Sparks Lake Fire in 2021. Timelapse photogrammetry reveals sharp post‐fire channel widening and increase in migration rate. Through multispectral remote‐sensing analysis, these morphodynamic changes are related to burn severity affecting the watershed.

Extended HPV typing as an efficient alternative within HPV‐based screening programs

open access: yesInternational Journal of Cancer, Volume 159, Issue 3, Page 638-644, 1 August 2026.
What's New? Extended high‐risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) typing holds promise for improving cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 3 (CIN3) detection, particularly as vaccinated cohorts may shift the prevalence of oncogenic HPV types. The authors of this study evaluated extended hrHPV genotyping within a public screening program involving women ...

Raman Line Scan Analyses and a New Hypothesis for the Formation of Anatase‐Hosting Microbialites: Study of the Stromatolites From Saint‐Jean‐de‐la‐Rivière, Cotentin, France

open access: yesJournal of Raman Spectroscopy, Volume 57, Issue 8, Page 1463-1480, August 2026.
Micrometer analysis of millimeter lines of Raman spectra concludes in the association of anatase and graphitized organic matter (graphogen). The photosynthetic microorganisms at the origin of the microbialites produce O2, which is transformed by TiO2 into reactive species that, in turn, decompose the organic matter of the microorganisms.
