Transitions of social-ecological subsistence systems in the Arctic [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Transitions of social-ecological systems (SES) expose governance systems to new challenges. This is particularly so in the Arctic where resource systems are increasingly subjected to global warming, industrial development and globalization which ...

Polar bear attack on a juvenile narwhal

open access: yesFauna Norvegica, 1990
A juvenile female narwhal Monodon monoceros landed at Pond Inlet had several sets of scratches on the posterior part of the body. They were probably made by a polar bear Ursus maritimus in the course of an unsuccessful attack.

Data on the angular characteristics of the spiral structure of the narwhal tusk

open access: yesData in Brief, 2018
We studied morphometric features of the spiral structure of the narwhal tusk and show that angular parameters of the arcs of the cementum layer determine the pattern of the spiral structure of the tusk.

Aerial photographic identification of narwhal (Monodon monoceros) newborns and their spatial proximity to the nearest adult female

open access: yesArctic Science, 2018
Population and species management of long-lived species such as narwhal (Monodon monoceros) require long-term ecological monitoring programs to provide baseline information on population structure and dynamics.

Size and trends of the bowhead whale, beluga and narwhal stocks wintering off West Greenland

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications, 2002
To assess the size and trends of the abundance of the bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus), the beluga, or white whale (Delphinapterus leucas), and the narwhal (Monodon monoceros) visual aerial surveys were conducted in West Greenland in March 1998 and ...

Narwhal Abundance in the Eastern Canadian High Arctic in 2013

open access: yesNAMMCO Scientific Publications, 2020
In summer, narwhals (Monodon monoceros) migrate from Baffin Bay to northeastern Canada and northwest Greenland, where they are hunted by Inuit for subsistence. To prevent localized depletion, management of narwhals is based on summer stocks.

Marine mammal biodiversity and rare narwhal (Monodon monoceros) observations near northern Ellesmere Island, Canada

open access: yesEcosphere, 2021
A climate‐driven decline of sea ice has increased international interest in understanding the ecology of seldom studied high‐Arctic regions projected to retain the last remnants of summer sea ice.
