Orofacial pain disorder or trigeminal autonomic cephalalgia? Insights into pathophysiology and implications in medicine and dentistry

open access: yesHeadache: The Journal of Head and Face Pain, EarlyView.
There are some headache disorders known as trigeminal autonomic cephalalgias (TACs). When these “headaches” are localized in the mid‐face region, they are known as “trigeminal autonomic orofacial pains” (TAOPs), and they can mimic other types of face pains including dental pain, which puts the patient at risk of receiving treatments that are incorrect.

A new tooth size determination method based on the maxillary canine using facial proportions as a reference: the Abay ratio — a retrospective study

open access: yesSaudi Dental Journal
Accurate estimation of tooth size is essential for achieving esthetic and functional harmony in orthodontic and restorative treatments. However, traditional analyses like Bolton’s do not account for facial proportions, limiting individualized planning ...

Prevalence of Dental Caries in Persons With or Without Long‐Term Experience of Positive Airway Pressure‐Treated Obstructive Sleep Apnoea

open access: yesInternational Journal of Dental Hygiene, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Oral dryness is common in persons with untreated obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) as well as in those using positive airway pressure (PAP). OSA with or without PAP treatment could therefore be a risk factor of dental caries. Objectives To describe and compare the prevalence of dental caries among persons with or without PAP‐treated OSA.

Deep Learning Models for Detection of Periapical Radiolucent Lesions on Panoramic Radiographs: A Systematic Review and Meta‐Analysis

open access: yesInternational Endodontic Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Background Panoramic radiographs are used routinely to screen dental conditions and treatment patterns. Recently, numerous studies have suggested that deep learning (DL) models can be utilized for analysing panoramic radiographs. Objective This review aimed to evaluate the accuracy of DL models in detecting periapical radiolucent lesions (PRLs)

The Rationale Behind a Continuous Nasal Positive Airway Pressure Machine That Approximates the Nasal Cycle During Sleep

open access: yes, 2017
Normal nasal airflow alternates in dominance between the two nostrils with an ultradian rhythm called the “nasal cycle.” The nasal cycle is thought to enable the patent airway to perform the majority of the air-conditioning functions, while the congested

Long‐Term Esthetic‐Functional Rehabilitation of Unilateral Cleft Lip and Palate With a Cross‐Arch Monolithic Zirconia Fixed Dental Prosthesis Following Multidisciplinary Treatment: 5‐Year Post‐Prosthetic Follow‐Up

open access: yesJournal of Esthetic and Restorative Dentistry, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objective This case report describes the esthetic‐functional rehabilitation of a patient with unilateral complete cleft lip and palate who was managed multidisciplinarily from 10 to 18 years of age, and reports the clinical outcome 5 years after definitive prosthetic rehabilitation, which was undertaken after late secondary alveolar bone ...

A bristle‐nosed Jurassic ray‐finned fish (Actinopterygii) bears true dermal odontodes on its snout

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Teeth show extreme diversity, including tooth‐like dermal odontodes or “skin teeth” in many extant fishes. We describe the anatomy of enlarged tubercles on the snout of Redfieldius, an extinct early Jurassic fish. We found that the tubercles in Redfieldius are dermal odontodes that evolved independently from those of living species. Abstract Comparison

Anatomical description of the jaw muscles and theoretical bite force assessment in South American opossums using manual and digital dissection methods

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, EarlyView.
Manual and virtual dissections were employed to examine the masticatory muscle architecture and bite force of three South American marsupials. The organisation of the muscles differed between species, with predicted bite forces exceeding previous estimates.
