Nasal, Septal, and Turbinate Anatomy and Embryology

open access: yesOtolaryngologic Clinics of North America, 2009
This article discusses the development and anatomy of the nasal septum and structures of the lateral nasal wall. Emphasis is placed on anatomic variations associated with surgically correctable nasal obstruction. Common variations, such as deviated nasal septum, inferior turbinate hypertrophy, paradoxic middle turbinate, and concha bullosa, are ...

Nasal Septal Turbinate: Cadaveric Study

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Rhinology & Allergy, 2014
Background Despite the importance of its location, the functional behavior of the nasal septal turbinate (NST) is still not completely understood. Basic histological knowledge is still lacking. The aim of this study was to describe the histological features of the NST and to compare its morphometric features to ...

Nasal Cytology in Radiofrequency Turbinate Volume Reduction

Orl, 2021
<b><i>Introduction:</i></b> Radiofrequency turbinate volume reduction (RFTVR) is an effective treatment of inferior turbinate hypertrophy. RFTVR can reduce epithelial cell alterations in nasal mucosa. The aim of this observational study was to evaluate the effects of RFTVR on nasal obstruction and cytology, stratifying for ...

Solitary Neurofibroma of the Inferior Nasal Turbinate

Auris Nasus Larynx, 1998
We present a case of neurofibroma of the nasal inferior turbinate operated under endoscopic control. A 29 year-old female reported progressive left-side nasal obstruction over the past year. Endoscopic examination revealed a mass arising from the left inferior turbinate.

CT Demonstration of Accessory Nasal Turbinates: Secondary Middle Turbinate and Bifid Inferior Turbinate

European Journal of Radiology, 1999
Normally, there are three pairs of nasal turbinates in the nasal cavity. Coronal computed tomographies of 253 cases of sinusitis were examined for the presence of additional turbinates and bilateral secondary middle turbinates were detected in two cases.

Nasal Respiratory Turbinate Function in Birds [PDF]

open access: yesPhysiological and Biochemical Zoology, 2000
Nasal respiratory turbinates are complex, epithelially lined structures in nearly all birds and mammals that act as intermittent countercurrent heat exchangers during routine lung ventilation. This study examined avian respiratory turbinate function in five large bird species (115-1,900 g) inhabiting mesic temperate climates. Evaporative water loss and

Anatomical Variations of Nasal Turbinates

Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, 2008
After the widespread use of endoscopic sinus surgery and paranasal sinus computed tomography, many variations of nasal turbinates have been described. In addition to the most common one-middle turbinate pneumatization (concha bullosa)-superior and inferior turbinate pneumatizations have also been described.

Cryosurgery of the Inferior Nasal Turbinates

Auris Nasus Larynx, 1990
Forty-seven patients with irreversible nasal obstruction due to inferior turbinate hypertrophy were treated by cryosurgery, the short and medium term results having been clinically evaluated. Permanent good results in nasal breathing were achieved in 83% of the patients. Failures are mostly related to turbinates hypertrophy due to nasal allergy.

Nasal turbinate resection for relief of nasal obstruction.

The Laryngoscope, 1983
AbstractSurgical correction of mechanical nasal airway obstruction is commonly attempted by means of septoplasty or submucous resection. In spite of these procedures, patients continue to present postoperatively with inadequate nasal airflow due to hypertrophied turbinates.

The Nasal Septum and Turbinates

2020
Proper understanding of the function of the nose necessitates deep understanding of its anatomy and physiology as illustrated in depth regarding the septum and the inferior turbinates. Septal surgeries are not only for breathing improvement, but it can be for other indications or part of another surgery.
