Pneumococcal sepsis and nasopharyngeal carriage

Current Opinion in Pulmonary Medicine, 2012
Streptococcus pneumoniae (the pneumococcus) remains an important cause of invasive disease including bacteraemia. This review highlights recent findings related to pneumococcal bacteraemia, virulence factors, and multiple colonization, including strain competition, biofilm formation, and competence.Countries with no vaccination programmes see vaccine ...

Nasopharyngeal carriage ofHaemophilus influenzae

The Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 2002
Nasopharyngeal colonization of Haemophilus influenzae (H. influenzae) in young children may be important in developing countries. In this study, we screened school going children for carriage of H. influenzae. A total of 44 H. influenzae isolates out of a collection of 162 were characterized for biotypes, capsular serotypes and antibiotic resistance.A ...

Nasopharyngeal carriage of Streptococcus pneumoniae

The Indian Journal of Pediatrics, 2007
To determine nasopharyngeal carriage rate and prevalent serogroups/types (SGT) of S. pneumoniae in healthy children, assess their antimicrobial susceptibility and its implications over the heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.200 healthy children aged between 3 months and 3 years attending Pediatric OPD at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi were ...

Nasopharyngeal carriage of pneumococci in Gambian children and in their families

The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal, 1996
Nasopharyngeal carriage of pneumococci is prevalent among children in developing countries but little is known about the relationship of nasopharyngeal carriage to invasive disease or about the way in which pneumococci spread within households. To determine the prevalence of nasopharyngeal carriage in healthy and sick Gambian children and to investigate

Effect of Spiramycin on the Nasopharyngeal Carriage of Neisseria meningitidis

Chemotherapy, 2009
Nine doses of oral spiramycin were administered to 59 adult healthy nasopharyngeal carriers of meningococci: a 2-gramme loading dose followed by 1 g every 12 h for 4 days. There was a reduction in carriage of 85 and 59%, respectively, on the 2nd and 12th post-treatment day.

Nasopharyngeal carriage ofStaphylococcus aureus and carriage of tetracycline-resistant strains associated with HIV-seropositivity

European Journal of Clinical Microbiology & Infectious Diseases, 1995
The aim of this prospective study was to investigate the relationship between carriage of antibiotic-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). A total of 554 pernasal swabs was taken during a six-month period from 554 adult patients attending three outpatient clinics and from inpatients from a hospital ...

Nasopharyngeal carriage of Haemophilus influenzae among adults with co-morbidities

Vaccine, 2022
After the widespread use of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine, H. influenzae invasive disease is now commonly due to non-encapsulated (NTHi), affecting mostly the youngest and the elderly. The objective of this study was to investigate H.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN SEXES IN THE NASOPHARYNGEAL CARRIAGE OF NEISSERIA MENINGITIDIS

American Journal of Epidemiology, 1977
Nasopharyngeal carriage of Neisseria meningitidis was investigated among male and female students sharing similar occupational and living environments at the U.S. Naval Hospital Corps School, Great Lakes, Illinois, in 1972-1973. When students beginning the study without meningococcal carriage were evaluated, meningococcal acquisition, weekly carrier ...

Nasopharyngeal carriage of meningococcus and meningococcal meningitis in Sokoto, Nigeria

Acta Paediatrica, 1999
In an attempt to determine the epidemiology of meningococcal diseases in Sokoto, Nigeria, nasopharyngeal carriage of meningococcus was studied among the groups at the greatest risk of the disease, i.e. children and young adults. Of 726 subjects sampled, 45 (6.2%) carried meningococcus. Sixteen (35.6%) of the 45 isolates belonged to serogroup B.
