L‐aspartate oxidase provides new insights into fumarate reduction in anaerobic darkness in Synechocystis sp. PCC6803

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Synechocystis strains deficient in succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) secrete more succinate than the WT under dark anaerobic conditions, supporting that SDH then primarily acts as SDH, not as a fumarate reductase. L‐aspartate oxidase (Laspo) from Synechocystis is functional under anaerobic conditions, reducing fumarate to succinate.

Creating Intriguing Synergies with Course Offerings: Integrating industry qualifications - An ITP perspective [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Aligning tertiary institute courses and programmes with internationally recognised industry qualifications has been the subject of various publications (Atkins 2002, Gutierrez and Tawa, 2003) and has engendered much debate among academics for several ...

A context‐dependent modulatory role for eIF6 in acquired resistance to vemurafenib in melanoma

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Acquired resistance to vemurafenib upregulates the translation factor eIF6 in melanoma cells. Silencing eIF6 in resistant cells reduces proliferation and partially restores drug sensitivity, whereas its overexpression increases sensitivity across melanoma lines regardless of BRAF status, via modulation of mTOR, S6K, and MAPK signaling.

Standardizing education? The development of the European Qualifications Framework and national qualifications frameworks

open access: yes, 2016
This study will contribute to a better understanding of the development of the European Qualifications Framework (EQF), a new policy solution proposed at the European level, with its stated aim being to create more transparency of qualifications across ...

The ubiquitin system in normal and infected germinal center B cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The ubiquitin system plays a central role in germinal center (GC) B cells, influencing differentiation to long‐lived memory B cells. Oncogenic gammaherpesviruses gain access to memory B cells by establishing latency in GC B cells. Mapping ubiquitin mechanisms in normal and infected GC B cells will define specific molecular circuits in B cells germane ...

Metastatic niche shaped by host factors influences disseminated cancer cell fate

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Metastasis is shaped not only by cancer cells but also by the environments they encounter. This review explores how factors such as aging, diet, the microbiome, lifestyle, and environmental exposures remodel organ‐specific niches in the lung, liver, bone, and brain, influencing where metastatic cells survive, remain dormant, or grow, and ultimately ...

Invisible but not inaccessible—Revealing transient oligomers formed by intrinsically disordered proteins with solution NMR and complementary methods

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Transient oligomers formed by intrinsically disordered proteins may be ‘invisible’ to direct detection yet remain accessible to solution NMR through equilibrium‐exchange measurements and pressure‐jump experiments. Complementary methods report on mass, stoichiometry, selected distance distributions, morphology, and internal packing.

Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?
