Design approach for mitigation of air ingress in high temperature gas-cooled reactor

open access: yesMechanical Engineering Journal, 2016
One important safety design consideration for high temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) is air ingress following a rupture of the reactor pressure boundary such as primary piping.

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Removal of Refractory Dissolved Organic Carbon in the Amundsen Sea, Antarctica. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2020
The removal mechanism of refractory deep-ocean dissolved organic carbon (deep-DOC) is poorly understood. The Amundsen Sea Polynya (ASP) serves as a natural test basin for assessing the fate of deep-DOC when it is supplied with a large amount of fresh-DOC

Shaping Ti3C2 MXene Nanospheres for Precision Near‐Infrared Photothermal Therapy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, we report producing spherical MXenes via fs laser fragmentation of Ti3C2 flakes in liquid medium. The nanoparticles demonstrated pronounced light absorption and high photothermal conversion efficiencies of 68% and 63% under heating with NIR‐I and NIR‐II lasers, respectively.

Meta‐Rod Mechanical Metamaterials With Programmable Reconfiguration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Existing mechanical metamaterials achieve programmable large deformations in planar square or cubic configurations, restricted by required complex boundary conditions. This research proposes a 1D metamaterial, Meta‐rod, with linear, bending, twisting, area, and volume deformation modes.

VIVID: A qPCR‐Based Platform for Sensitive and Quantitative In Vivo Tracking of Extracellular Vesicles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study introduces VIVID (Vesicle In Vivo Identification using DNA), a qPCR‐based platform that tracks PCR‐amplifiable DNA tags loaded in the EVs for accurate and quantifiable EV biodistribution in vivo. ABSTRACT Extracellular vesicles (EVs) represent promising carriers for nucleic acid therapeutics, offering advantages over synthetic nanoparticles ...

Biomimetic Nanovaccine Integrating Dendritic Cell Exosomes with Tumor Cell Membranes for Sustained Prophylaxis Against Glioblastoma

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
We have developed DEX/GM, an all‐natural, personalizable hybrid vaccine designed by coating dendritic cell‐derived exosomes (DEX) onto tumor cell membranes (GM) for sustained prophylaxis against glioblastoma (GBM). ABSTRACT Glioblastoma (GBM), one of the most aggressive and lethal brain tumors, remains incurable with a poor clinical prognosis.

Liquid Phase Transmission Electron Microscopy: A Window into the Early Stages of Complex Material Formation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Liquid‐phase transmission electron microscopy enables direct observation of nucleation and growth processes in solution. This review is dedicated to the remembrance of Helmut Cölfen and highlights recent studies on complex materials—oxides, biominerals, organic–inorganic crystals—which were central to his research activity. It summarizes key milestones,

Flow Heat Transfer Characteristic in Rod Bundle Channel in Natural Circulation System for Rolling Condition

open access: yesYuanzineng kexue jishu, 2022
There is mixing and second flow in sub-channels of the rod bundle. The flow and heat transfer characteristics in rod bundle are more complex than those in rectangular channel and round pipes.
