Monocyte LOXHD1 and RHOB Expression Predictive of Progressive Systemic Sclerosis–Associated Interstitial Lung Disease

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective A leading cause of death among patients with scleroderma (SSc), interstitial lung disease (ILD) remains challenging to prognosticate. The discovery of biomarkers that accurately determine which patients would benefit from close monitoring and aggressive therapy would be an essential clinical tool.

Development and Preliminary In Vivo Study of 3D‐Printed Bioactive Glass Scaffolds with Trabecular Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study reports the fabrication of trabecular bioactive glass scaffolds (composition “1d”: 46.1SiO2‐28.7CaO‐8.8MgO‐6.2P2O5‐5.7CaF2‐4.5Na2O wt%) through vat photopolymerization and the relevant results from mechanical testing and in vivo implantation procedures in rabbit femora, showing great promise for bone tissue engineering applications.

The Schottky problem in genus five [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper, we present a solution to the Schottky problem in the spirit of Schottky and Jung for genus five curves. To do so, we exploit natural incidence structures on the fibers of several maps to reduce all questions to statements about the Prym ...

Fiber propagation of vector modes

open access: yes, 2015
Here we employ both dynamic and geometric phase control of light to produce radially modulated vector-vortex modes, the natural modes of optical fibers.

Advancing Research on Biomaterials and Biological Materials with Scanning Electron Microscopy under Environmental and Low Vacuum Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Herein, environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) is discussed as a powerful extension of conventional SEM for life sciences. By combining high‐resolution imaging with variable pressure and humidity, ESEM allows the analysis of untreated biological materials, supports in situ monitoring of hydration‐driven changes, and advances the functional ...

Mirror Symmetry on Kummer Type K3 Surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
We investigate both geometric and conformal field theoretic aspects of mirror symmetry on N=(4,4) superconformal field theories with central charge c=6. Our approach enables us to determine the action of mirror symmetry on (non-stable) singular fibers in

Multimodal Mechanical Testing of Additively Manufactured Ti6Al4V Lattice Structures: Compression, Bending, and Fatigue

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this experimental study, the mechanical properties of additively manufactured Ti‐6Al‐4V lattice structures of different geometries are characterized using compression, four point bending and fatigue testing. While TPMS designs show superior fatigue resistance, SplitP and Honeycomb lattice structures combine high stiffness and strength. The resulting

Application of Raman Spectroscopy for Differentiation Among Cotton and Viscose Fibers Dyed with Several Dye Classes [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
The difference between natural and regenerated cellulose fibers caused by variations in the degree of polymerization and supramolecular structure, influences dyes adsorption properties.

Unidirectional Tape‐Based Composites from Hemp and Pineapple Leaf Fiber: Mechanical Performance in Conventional and Bio‐Based Matrices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The study investigates novel semi‐finished products made of unidirectionally arranged hemp or pineapple leaf fiber‐reinforced composites produced from different matrices. The materials are analyzed in terms of their mechanical and interfacial properties and void content.

Low-Voltage SEM of Natural Plant Fibers: Microstructure Properties (Surface and Cross-Section) and their Link to the Tensile Properties [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
In this study, the microstructure of different natural plant fibers (flax, jute, ramie, and sisal fibers) were characterized by using low-voltage Scanning Electron Microscopy (LV-SEM).
