It is well-known that the human visual system is adapted to the statistical structure of natural scenes. Yet there are important classes of images – for example, medical images – that are not natural scenes, and therefore, that are expected to have ...

IMPROVING THE PERFORMANCE OF NO-REFERENCE IMAGE QUALITY ASSESSMENT ALGORITHM FOR CONTRAST-DISTORTED IMAGES USING NATURAL SCENE STATISTICS [PDF]
This study was made to explore the role of two color feature in improving the performance of the existing No-Reference Image Quality Assessment Algorithm for Contrast-Distorted Images (NR-IQA-CDI).

Membrane composition and thermodynamic identity as boundaries of life for synthetic cell research
What makes a cell a cell? The boundary of a living cell is not just a wall. Read as a Markov blanket, the membrane separates internal from external states, generating identity and non‐equilibrium order. Can this identity be rebuilt from scratch in a synthetic cell?

A Comparison of Image Statistics of Peacock Jumping Spider Colour Patterns and Natural Scenes
The form of arbitrary sexual signals may be driven by the need to be detectable against the background or, alternatively, by selection for efficient processing by the nervous system. This latter alternative is a prediction of the sensory drive hypothesis

Combining osimertinib with the STING agonist ADU‐S100 activates innate and adaptive immunity to overcome the non‐inflamed microenvironment of Egfr‐mutant lung cancer. This combination increases NK and CD8+ T‐cell infiltration, associated with activation of the STING‐IRF3 pathway and local immunogenic cell death.

The lawful imprecision of human surface tilt estimation in natural scenes
Estimating local surface orientation (slant and tilt) is fundamental to recovering the three-dimensional structure of the environment. It is unknown how well humans perform this task in natural scenes.

Loss of proton‐sensing TDAG8 increases tumor progression in mouse models of colon cancer
Loss of the pH‐sensing receptor TDAG8 accelerates colorectal cancer progression in mice. Animals lacking TDAG8 expression had increased tumor growth, DNA damage, and recruitment of tumor‐associated immune cells, including macrophages, neutrophils, and monocytes.

This study integrates publicly available transcriptomic datasets to identify molecular signatures associated with response to neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy in locally advanced rectal cancer. By analyzing a combination of multiple cohorts with bioinformatics approaches, we reveal biological pathways and immune‐related features that may improve ...
