China is a country rich in plants and microbe species that cultivate a remarkable diversity of secondary metabolites. Such products include 'qinghaosu' (artemisinin) and huperzine A, which are used in the treatment of malaria and Alzheimer's disease, respectively.

A number of marine metabolites have been isolated from the ascidian L. bistratum. These include the bistramide series of compounds (bistramides A-K). Bistramide A had been previously isolated and characterised, however, while the structural connectivity had been established, the relative and absolute stereochemistry was unclear.
