Rotational dynamics of irregularly shaped natural satellites
The rotational histories of irregularly shaped satellites are studied and are found to differ from the standard picture of tidal evolution of satellite rotations. Prior to capture into the synchronous rotation resonance, a narrow attitude-unstable chaotic zone is entered and the satellite begins to tumble chaotically.

Dynamics in mangroves assessed by high-resolution and multi-temporal satellite data: a case study in Zhanjiang Mangrove National Nature Reserve (ZMNNR), P. R. China [PDF]
Abstract. Mangrove forests are declining across the globe, mainly because of human intervention, and therefore require an evaluation of their past and present status (e.g. areal extent, species-level distribution, etc.) to implement better conservation and management strategies. In this paper, mangrove cover dynamics at Gaoqiao (P. R.

Fingerprint of rice paddies in spatial-temporal dynamics of atmospheric methane concentration in monsoon Asia. [PDF]
Agriculture (e.g., rice paddies) has been considered one of the main emission sources responsible for the sudden rise of atmospheric methane concentration (XCH4) since 2007, but remains debated.

Effects of Semistochastic Westerly Wind Bursts on ENSO Predictability
Westerly wind bursts (WWBs) occurring over the tropical Pacific play an important role on El Niño‐Southern Oscillation (ENSO) dynamics. Currently, climate models have significant biases in their representation of WWBs, which may limit their ability to ...

Predicting and Understanding the Pacific Decadal Oscillation Using Machine Learning
The Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO), the dominant pattern of sea surface temperature anomalies in the North Pacific basin, is an important low-frequency climate phenomenon. Leveraging data spanning from 1871 to 2010, we employed machine learning models

Dynamics and Spatial Distribution of Global Nighttime Lights [PDF]
Using open source data, we observe the fascinating dynamics of nighttime light. Following a global economic regime shift, the planetary center of light can be seen moving eastwards at a pace of about 60 km per year.
