Asteroid 2014 OL339: yet another Earth quasi-satellite

open access: yes, 2014
Our planet has one permanently bound satellite -the Moon-, a likely large number of mini-moons or transient irregular natural satellites, and three temporary natural retrograde satellites or quasi-satellites. These quasi-moons -(164207) 2004 GU9, (277810)

A computer-assisted proof of symbolic dynamics in Hyperion's inner rotation model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The rotation of Hyperion is often modelled by equations of motion of an ellipsoidal satellite. The model is expected to be chaotic for large range of parameters.

Raman Spectroscopic Identification of Oxide Phases in a Corroded MgO–Steel Composite Anode Used in Aluminum Molten Salt Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Micro‐Raman spectroscopy is applied to characterize corrosion products in a recycled‐based MgO–316L steel composite anode after molten salt electrolysis. A depth‐dependent Fe–O/Fe–Al–O layer sequence of magnetite, hercynite, and an Al‐doped magnetite transition zone is identified.

Additive Manufacturing of Continuous Fibre Reinforced Composites: Process, Characterisation, Modelling, and Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing provides precise control over the placement of continuous fibres within polymer matrices, enabling customised mechanical performance in composite components. This article explores processing strategies, mechanical testing, and modelling approaches for additive manufactured continuous fibre‐reinforced composites.

Predicting the 2023/24 El Niño from a multi-scale and global perspective

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
The 2023/24 El Niño ranks as the second strongest event in the twenty-first century thus far. The event exhibited a two-step warming tendency and two warming centers, which could not be explained by the heat content buildup.

Improved Filtering of ICESat-2 Lidar Data for Nearshore Bathymetry Estimation Using Sentinel-2 Imagery

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2021
The accurate estimation of nearshore bathymetry is necessary for multiple aspects of coastal research and practices. The traditional shipborne single-beam/multi-beam echo sounders and Airborne Lidar bathymetry (ALB) have a high cost, are inefficient, and

Copper Nanocrystallization in Anodic Oxide Films of Ti–Cu‐Based Bulk Metallic Glass and Its Effect on the Corrosion Resistance and Cytocompatibility

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Viktoriia Shtefan, Thorgund Nemec, Ute Hempel, Annett Gebert and coworkers demonstrate that anodic treatment of Ti–Cu‐based metallic glass in a nontoxic pyrophosphate electrolyte forms a protective bilayered Ti/Zr‐oxide film enriched with Cu nanocrystals.

Spatiotemporal Variations and Environmental Evolution of Seaweed Cultivation Based on 41-Year Remote Sensing Data: A Case Study in the Dongtou Archipelago

open access: yesRemote Sensing
The rapid expansion of seaweed aquaculture has profound impacts on coastal ecosystems, yet the lack of long-term, high-precision spatiotemporal monitoring methods has constrained systematic understanding of aquaculture dynamics and their environmental ...

Experimental Study on Bottom-Up Detection of Underwater Targets Based on Polarization Imaging

open access: yesSensors, 2022
Previous studies on the polarization imaging of underwater targets mainly focused on top-down detection; however, the capacities of bottom-up detection were poorly known.
