Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Epigenetic blind spots – the role of DNA methylation dynamics in stem cell‐based models of embryogenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Embryo‐like structures (stembryos) are an innovative tool, but they are hindered by experimental variability and limited developmental potential. DNA methylation is crucial for mammalian development, but its status in stembryo models is poorly characterized.

Root rot in north-temperate forest stands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2005
The aim of the present thesis was to study the biology and to evaluate possible means of silvicultural control of tree root pathogens Heterobasidion spp., Armillaria spp. and Rhizina undulata.

An unexpected alternative viologen electron mediator site in tungsten‐containing formate dehydrogenase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
An unexpected alternative interaction site for ethyl viologen was identified in formate dehydrogenase 1 from Methylorubrum extorquens. Combined mutagenesis, kinetic analysis, and docking revealed that aromatic residues near an iron–sulfur cluster enable flavin mononucleotide‐independent electron transfer, offering a framework for engineering improved ...

Influence of spacing and thinning on wood properties in conifer plantations [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
As reported in four appended papers (I-IV), effects of genotype (half-sib family) and initial spacing (I) or initial spacing (II) and various thinning methods (III & IV) on stands and properties of sawn-products were investigated in Scots pine (I & IV ...

Lichen colonization in natural gap disturbances and old growth stands [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Lichen colonization was studied in small (1-3 ha) natural gap disturbances embedded in a matrix of old growth cedar-hemlock forest in east central British Columbia, Canada.

Structural diversity of selected oak stands (Quercus robur L.) on the Krotoszyn Plateau in Poland

open access: yesLeśne Prace Badawcze, 2017
The oak forests growing on the Krotoszyn Plateau are the biggest and most valuable oak forest complexes in Poland. The purpose of this study was to analyze the structural diversity of oak (Q. robur L.) stands older than 140 years.

Standing in the way by standing in the middle: The case of state-owned natural gas intermediaries in Bulgaria [PDF]

open access: yesGeoforum, 2014
Bulgaria is a significant natural gas transit state in the EU (a role set to increase with the South Stream and potential Nabucco West gas pipelines) and a Member State subject to EU regulation. As a result, the regulation of natural gas in the country is of direct relevance to the development, implementation and realisation of EU energy security ...

Electron transfer between complexes III and IV in S. cerevisiae mitochondrial membranes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in S. cerevisiae mitoplasts is limited by complex IV catalytic capacity, rather than two‐dimensional cytochrome c diffusion. At physiological cytochrome c : supercomplex ratios at salinity equivalent to that of 20 mm monovalent salt, activity is maximized, indicating that this low ionic strength accurately mimics

Acorn production of pedunculate oak in northeast of Ukraine

open access: yesMetsanduslikud Uurimused, 2023
We analysed the quantity and quality of Quercus robur L. acorns after years with a very poor yield under the canopy of natural oak stands of various compositions, ages and stock densities in the northeastern part of Ukraine.
