Natural user interfaces for multitouch devices [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
This thesis presents a new class of user interfaces, which a commonly referred to as natural user interfaces. It discusses their main characteristics, evolution and advantages over currently dominant graphical user interfaces. Special attention is devoted to the subgroup of natural user interfaces for multitouch devices.

Redefining Natural User Interface

Extended Abstracts of the 2018 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2018
This SIG focuses on new definitions of Natural User Interface (NUI). With the adoption of wearable devices, VR & AR displays, affective computing, and voice user interface, we think it's necessary to review our understanding and definition of NUI. This SIG aims to expand discussion and development related to NUI in two areas: first, what experience ...

The future of natural user interfaces

CHI '11 Extended Abstracts on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2011
This SIG is a forum to advance an integrated approach to multi-modal Natural User Interfaces. Up until now the research and design of NUI interfaces for various modalities (speech, touch, gesture) has proceeded independently. We propose having an integrated discussion with both academics and practitioners to stimulate the exchange of knowledge about ...

Questioning naturalism in 3D user interfaces

Communications of the ACM, 2012
3D UIs are uniquely able to achieve superior interaction fidelity, and this naturalism can be a huge advantage.

Natural user interface for interactive television

2013 IEEE International Symposium on Consumer Electronics (ISCE), 2013
In this paper, we try to develop a natural user interface for interactive TV, which is more natural and easy to use with a webcam and the fingers of user. We analyze the images captured by the camera settled on the screen and track any fingers of the users. After the fingers were tracked, users can control the TV by the gestures.

Natural user interfaces

CHI '10 Extended Abstracts on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2010
Natural User Interfaces show great promise to define new and potentially large niches of interactive computing. The promise of Natural Computing Interfaces (touch and gesture) stems from at least two sources -- the prospect of touch and gestural computing becoming as ubiquitous as currently dominant paradigms (e.g.

Natural user interface hardware

2013 IEEE Symposium on 3D User Interfaces (3DUI), 2013
Summary form only given. One-year olds can use touch screens-youtube has proof of that. But why-what makes certain interactive devices so “natural” that any child can just pick them up and use them? The key seems to be user interface hardware that only allows for the one thing even 1-year olds can do-point.

Evaluation of Natural User Interfaces in the Creative Industries

Extended Abstracts of the 2020 CHI Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2020
The case study presented in this paper is concerned with the applicability of natural user interfaces (NUI) in the context of previsualization (previs). For this purpose, we have developed a virtual reality (VR) based tool that includes NUIs as a novel way to perform previs-related tasks.
