Organ‐specific redox imbalances in spinal muscular atrophy mice are partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotides

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We identified a systemic, progressive loss of protein S‐glutathionylation—detected by nonreducing western blotting—alongside dysregulation of glutathione‐cycle enzymes in both neuronal and peripheral tissues of Taiwanese SMA mice. These alterations were partially rescued by SMN antisense oligonucleotide therapy, revealing persistent redox imbalance as ...

Experimental study of wave-driven sediment suspension in flexible vegetation canopies with rippled beds

open access: yesApplied Ocean Research
Laboratory experiments have been used to investigate the impact of flexible vegetation on sediment suspension over rippled sandy beds. Flexible vegetation mimics were examined across a range of wave conditions and stem densities, with rigid vegetation ...

Problems with Nature-Based Solutions

open access: yesPotentia: Journal of International Affairs, 2022
There is growing recognition of the fundamental dependence of our urban systems on natural ecosystems. In this context, nature-based solutions (NBS) are gaining traction. NBS can help mitigate flood and heat risks, provide ecosystem services, and offer new or better green living spaces for humans and wildlife alike. While NBS offer a valuable method of

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Integrated above‐ and below‐ground ecological monitoring for nature‐based solutions

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence
As the development of nature‐based solutions (NbS) increases globally, it is important to ensure that projects meet the objective of delivering benefits for biodiversity, alongside tackling societal challenges.

Blue infrastructure as nature-based solutions for urban sustainability: Evaluating local perceptions from four Indian megacities

open access: yes
Urban blue infrastructure provides multiple economic, social, and ecological benefits to local residents, and can enhance urban sustainability. However, few studies have examined the potential of traditional forms of blue infrastructure as nature-based ...

How Nature-Based Solutions Can Contribute to Enhance Circularity in Cities

open access: yes, 2022
Environmental education in different disciplines puts an accent on acquiring specialised knowledge and, while this remains essential, fostering knowledge alone, without links to real life, personal experiences, competencies, and values, is insufficient ...
