With the growth of public air transport, safety in the air is a matter of concern not just to those who design, manufacture and operate aircraft, but to the public at large. After an accident has occurred and an unfortunate chain of events leading to the accident is exposed, it may be easy to say ‘this accident should not have occurred’ or ‘would not ...

Power Technology and Engineering, 2002
The author's observations and studies of safety of navigation locks are described. A mathematical model of lock reliability and its graphical interpretation are presented. The possibility of determination of the accident risk level by processing statistical data is discussed.

Advanced Bayesian study on inland navigational risk of remotely controlled autonomous ship.
Accident Analysis and PreventionThe arise of autonomous ships has necessitated the development of new risk assessment techniques and methods. This study proposes a new framework for navigational risk assessment of remotely controlled Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS).

A Tanker Navigation Safety System
Journal of Navigation, 1997This paper summarizes the results of Phase 3 of the Arctic Tanker Risk Analysis Project (ATRA) which provided a prototype Tanker Navigation Safety System (TNSS). TNSS is a ship-board risk management system capable of route planning and decision support based upon a knowledge database.

Navigation safety of cruise vessels
2009Rapid escalation in size of cruise vessels presents a need for a development of new ports or calls for modification of already existing ones. In this paper, we present facts on ship’s safety as a main factor in determining its capability to call a port.

Safety-assured high-speed navigation for MAVs
Science RoboticsMicro air vehicles (MAVs) capable of high-speed autonomous navigation in unknown environments have the potential to improve applications like search and rescue and disaster relief, where timely and safe navigation is critical. However, achieving autonomous, safe, and high-speed MAV navigation faces systematic challenges, necessitating reduced vehicle ...
