NCOS News - January 2020

open access: yes, 2020
The Cheadle Center at UCSB manages the North Campus Open Space (NCOS), which is a project that has restored 136 acres of upland and wetland habitats that existed before the area was converted into the Ocean Meadows Golf Course in the 1960s. The NCOS restoration project began in 2017 with a fine-scale grading of the site in order to recreate the salt ...

Low-temperature heat transport of Nd_2CuO_4: Roles of Nd magnons and spin-structure transitions

open access: yes, 2011
We report the magnetic-field dependence of thermal conductivity (\kappa) of an insulating cuprate Nd_2CuO_4 at very low temperatures down to 0.3 K. It is found that apart from the paramagnetic moments scattering on phonons, the Nd^{3+} magnons can act as

Quantification of Homopolymer Impurities in Structured Acrylate Copolymers Produced by High‐Temperature Semi‐Batch Radical Polymerization

open access: yesMacromolecular Reaction Engineering, EarlyView.
Isobornyl acrylate macromonomer solutions are synthesized via high‐temperature radical polymerization using a starved‐feed semi‐batch operating policy. Through sequential feeding, the macromonomer solution functions as an addition‐fragmentation agent, facilitating the production of blocky and comb acrylate copolymers.

Mechanical, Thermal, and Microstructural Evaluation of Bio‐Based Polyurethane Composites Reinforced With Woven Jute and Flax

open access: yesPolymer Composites, EarlyView.
Graphical overview of the manufacturing and characterization of bio‐based polyurethane composites reinforced with woven jute and flax fibers produced by the VARTM process. Mechanical, thermal, and microstructural analyses reveal differences in stiffness, thermal stability, and interfacial behavior between the natural fiber composites.

Maintaining high conductivity in NiCo2O4 epitaxial thin films to 625 °C via an overlayer stabilization approach [PDF]

open access: yesAPL Materials
Spinel materials offer excellent physical, optical, and biomedical properties, particularly in epitaxial form. However, spinel electrode materials for these epitaxial films are limited. While NiCo2O4 (NCO) is a high-performing conductive spinel, it loses
