Numerical Simulations of Blast Loads from Near-Field Ground Explosions in Air

open access: yesStudia Geotechnica et Mechanica, 2015
Numerical simulations of air blast loading in the near-field acting on the ground have been performed. A simplified blast model based on empirical blast loading data representing spherical and hemispherical explosive shapes has been simulated.

Transition from Near-Field to Extreme Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters
The radiative heat transfer in the extreme near-field regime, i.e., for distances below 10 nm, remains poorly understood. There are competing experimental results in this regime, with some in good agreement with theoretical predictions, while others report drastically elevated heat fluxes, orders of magnitude larger than what theory suggests.

Prospecting the protein design landscape

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
This review outlines the current state of various protein design approaches. We discuss the current possibilities enabled by recently released tools, highlight future avenues to pursue in protein design, and underscore the crucial role of key databases and resources for successful protein design workflows.

SBR Method for Near-Field Scattering of an Electrically Large Complex Target Illuminated by Dipole Sources

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2018
An accurate and efficient physical-optics (PO) near-field integral representation is proposed and introduced into shooting and bouncing ray (SBR) to evaluate the electric and magnetic near-fields scattered from electrically large complex objects ...

THE DEVELOPMENT OF A NEW KA-BAND NEAR-FIELD PLANAR MEASUREMENT SYSTEM FOR A DIGITAL PHASED ARRAY RADAR [PDF]

open access: yes
A near-field planar scanner is an electromechanical system whose objective is to obtain the far-field pattern of a mostly directive antenna by recording its electromagnetic fields in the near-field region by taking measurements at different points on an ...

Near-Field Angular Scan Enhancement of Antenna Arrays Using Metasurfaces

open access: yes, 2020
In this publication we continue our previous work on extending the angular scan range of phased arrays using metasurfaces. We consider in detail scan enhancement using a single metasurface lens in the near-field of a source and provide analytical ...

Artificial molecular machines and motors—Design and control of nanoscale motion

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Molecules are constantly moving because of thermal fluctuations, but random motion alone cannot be exploited to perform directional tasks. Artificial molecular machines use chemical, electrical, or light energy to bias this motion. Molecular shuttles, rotary motors, and supramolecular pumps illustrate how nanoscale movement can be controlled and ...

Near-field optical images of subwavelength annular aperture arrays exhibiting an extraordinary transmission

open access: yes
In this paper, we present near-field optical images of nanostructures exhibiting an extraordinary transmission. These structures consist of annular aperture arrays engraved in a metallic film: they are quite promising structures for nanophotonics because

Leucine‐rich glioma inactivated 1 (LGI1) is a ganglioside‐binding protein

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Neuronal hyperexcitability associated with a decrease/absence of the extracellular protein LGI1 has been suggested to be primarily due to the downregulation of Kv1 channel expression. The molecular mechanisms underlying this decrease have not yet been elucidated.

Near-field edge fringes at sharp material boundaries

open access: yes, 2017
We have studied the formation of near-field fringes when sharp edges of materials are imaged using scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM).
