Near-inertial wave propagation in a curved front
In this work, we study the effect of flow curvature, or angular momentum, on the propagation and trapping characteristics of near-inertial waves (NIWs) in a curved front. The curved front is idealised as a baroclinic vortex in cyclogeostrophic balance.

One proposed mechanism for heating the solar wind, from close to the sun to beyond 10 AU, invokes low-frequency, oblique, Alfven-wave turbulence. Because small-scale oblique Alfven waves (kinetic Alfven waves) are compressive, the measured density ...

Anthropogenic climate change has increased interactions between typhoons and marine heatwaves (MHWs) worldwide. Typhoon Hinnamnor (2022), which originated in the northwestern Pacific and weakened over the East Sea, demonstrates this interaction.

Rapid Topographic Scatter of Near-Inertial Waves Generated by Storms
Abstract Internal waves propagate on the ocean’s stratification, carrying energy and redistributing momentum through the ocean. When internal waves break, they contribute to diapycnal mixing in the ocean interior, but this breaking behavior depends upon the scale of the waves.

Near-inertial parametric subharmonic instability of internal wave beams
Parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) of internal wave beams with nearly twice the inertial frequency due to background rotation in stratified fluid is studied theoretically. Such near-inertial PSI is possible for beams of general profile; generic PSI can arise only for quasimonochromatic beams.

Quasi-Periodic Oscillations from Magnetorotational Turbulence
Quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) in the X-ray lightcurves of accreting neutron star and black hole binaries have been widely interpreted as being due to standing wave modes in accretion disks.

Quantifying potential contribution of tropical cyclones to oceanic near-inertial internal waves
Near-inertial internal waves (NIWs) play a crucial role in upper-ocean turbulent mixing through shear instabilities. Tropical cyclones (TCs), with their intense variable winds, contribute significantly to NIWs, yet their global impact has been poorly ...

Electron-only Reconnection and Ion Heating in 3D3V Hybrid-Vlasov Plasma Turbulence
We perform 3D3V hybrid-Vlasov simulations of turbulence with quasi-isotropic, compressible injection near ion scales to mimic the Earth’s magnetosheath plasma, and investigate the novel electron-only reconnection, recently observed by NASA’s ...

Coherent Float Arrays for Near-Inertial Wave Studies
Rapid changes in winds drive rotating currents known as inertial oscillations. In a stratified ocean, these oscillations can then initiate subsurface near-inertial internal waves that propagate laterally and vertically and are refracted by horizontal gradients in vorticity. We report on a process study of wind forcing and ocean response in the Iceland
