Neck pain is less common than low back pain but still a relatively common reason for seeing a primary care physician. Therefore, it is necessary for the primary care physician to be comfortable with salient points in the history and to be able to perform a basic neurologic examination.

Imaging is an indispensable tool in patients with clinical suspicion of infrahyoid neck disease. CT and MR imaging can establish a positive diagnosis by showing a true mass (versus a pseudomass). In addition, by defining the exact space of origin of the lesion and its characteristics (CT density, MR signal, homo- or heterogeneity, contour, contrast ...

'Fiddler's neck' is a condition affecting violin and viola players. Although well known to musicians it is not well recognized by dermatologists. Clinically the lesions usually consist of a localized area of lichenification of the left side of the neck--just below the angle of the jaw.

The dermatologic pathological condition of musicians is a rare medical problem. We would like to draw attention to what is called "Fiddler's neck," a process that is peculiar to violin, viola, or cello players and that may be caused by two different mechanisms: contact allergic reaction or a mechanical action.

The neck has long been neglected when it comes to facial rejuvenation. More often than not the neck is left untreated, leaving the patient with a line of demarcation along the mandible separating a rejuvenated face from an aged neck. Neck rejuvenation involves targeting all of the layers of tissue that are affected by the aging process.

Six conditions cause most of the neck pain complaints seen by primary care physicians: cervical muscle strain or sprain, torticollis, acceleration injury, myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome, and cervical osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Most of them can be diagnosed and treated by the primary care physician.
