Classifying avian drinking behaviour: ecological insights and implications in a changing world

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 4, Page 1851-1862, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Water is a fundamental currency of life, and its availability significantly influences animal behaviour, physiology and distributions. However, our knowledge around the dependence on water for drinking and the direct and indirect mechanisms driving related behaviours remains partial in the context of changing climates. Here, we review patterns

Quaternary Climate Oscillations Shape Genetic Diversity and Spatial Structure of Viola hybanthoides (Violaceae) Endemic to Danxia Landscape

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
We adopted ddRAD‐seq and chloroplast genome sequencing to explore the genetic characteristics of the danxia‐endemic species Viola hybanthoides. This species exhibits extremely low within‐population genetic diversity and obvious genetic differentiation, which is mainly driven by habitat fragmentation, restricted gene flow and Quaternary climatic changes.

Mutualism and Antagonism in a Post‐Extinction Hawaiian Bird–Lobelioid Pollination System

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Species loss can restructure plant–pollinator interactions, but the functional consequences of altered interactions remain unclear. Using camera observations and experimental manipulations in Hawaiian lobelioids, we show that nectarivorous birds differ in whether visits result in pollen contact or nectar robbing, with robbing altering nectar dynamics ...

Signals of Paleotemperature in the Age Structure and Seasonal Distribution of Pollination Syndromes Across a Temperate Region

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Species with wind & insect pollination syndromes show distinct age structure patterns. Splitting insect pollination into different categories show constrasting age structure. Modern flowering seasons track paleotemperature signatures. ABSTRACT Across the planet, angiosperm diversification has been shaped by palaeoclimates and biotic interactions ...

Genomic and Morphological Insights Into the Adaptive Evolution of Honeybees in Rocky Desertification Habitats

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
Rocky desertification exerts significant selective pressures on honeybee morphology. Honeybees undergo adaptive evolution in 19 genes such as glycogen biosynthesis. Genes like GBE promote organismal survival under desertification. ABSTRACT Unlike traditional desertification, rocky desertification is a distinct form of land degradation characterized by ...
