A preventive strategy for the control of aphids in sweet pepper using lacewings and micrococcinelid beetles

open access: yesInsect Science, Volume 33, Issue 4, Page 1663-1674, August 2026.
Aphids pose a serious risk to horticultural crops. Current biocontrol strategies often fail due to the poor establishment of natural enemies when aphids are scarce. We evaluated the potential of two aphidophagous predators, Micromus variegatus and Scymnus interruptus, to be used as preventive biocontrol agents, released before aphid infestation.

Hidden Microbiota Inhabiting in Pollen Reserves of Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) From Amazonas Region Revealed by DNA Metabarcoding

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology Reports, Volume 18, Issue 4, August 2026.
DNA metabarcoding of honey bee pollen reserves from Amazonas region reveals that microbial communities are strongly shaped by their ecosystem. Despite high taxonomic turnover across different habitats, these microbiomes maintain stable, essential functions for pollinator health, though they remain highly vulnerable to habitat homogenization.

Modelling density surfaces from integrated passive acoustic and point count data streams

open access: yesMethods in Ecology and Evolution, Volume 17, Issue 8, Page 2449-2463, August 2026.
Abstract Point counts employing distance sampling methods can be used to accurately estimate animal detection probabilities and absolute abundances, but are difficult to implement over broad spatial and temporal scales. Passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) via autonomous recording units is an efficient method for monitoring populations of vocalizing ...

Temognatha sundholmi Lang sp. nov. (Coleoptera: Buprestidae), a New Species From the Great Victoria Desert and New Host Plants: An Investigation Using DNA Barcoding With Implications for Taxonomy of Temognatha and Melobasis

open access: yesAustral Entomology, Volume 65, Issue 3, August 2026.
ABSTRACT A new species of jewel beetle, Temognatha sundholmi Lang, sp. nov., is described from the Great Victoria Desert in South Australia. A broader investigation, using mtDNA COI ‘barcode’ sequences from 178 specimens representing 54 buprestid species, places the new species with Temognatha flavocincta (Gory & Laporte, 1838) in the informal ...

Diversity of Mites Associated With Stingless Bees (Hymenoptera: Meliponini) in Forest Fragments in Brazil: Empirical Validation of an Efficient and Low‐Cost Sampling Method

open access: yesAustral Entomology, Volume 65, Issue 3, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Despite the importance of understanding mite–bee interactions, standardized and noninvasive methods for sampling mite communities in stingless bee hives remain limited. This study aimed to evaluate a novel, low‐cost sampling technique using a custom‐built suction device, the Portable Mite Aspirator (PMA), for collecting mites from hives of ...
