Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Organizing the interface—Plasma membrane architecture and receptor dynamics in virus‐cell interactions

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Plasma membranes contain dynamic nanoscale domains that organize lipids and receptors. Because viruses operate at similar scales, this architecture shapes early infection steps, including attachment, receptor engagement, and entry. Using influenza A virus and HIV‐1 as examples, we highlight how receptor nanoclusters, multivalent glycan interactions ...

Negative pressure wound therapy of an anal cancer to facilitate further treatment – case report. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
A common treatment of bad healing wounds is vacuum assisted therapy (negative pressure wound therapy). The main clinical goal are: reduced time of wound healing, decreasing frequency of septic complications, and better functional and cosmetic effect. One

Simultaneous non-negative matrix factorization for multiple large scale gene expression datasets in toxiciology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Non-negative matrix factorization is a useful tool for reducing the dimension of large datasets. This work considers simultaneous non-negative matrix factorization of multiple sources of data.

The human gut microbiome across the life course

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Despite significant individual variation and continuous change throughout life, the human gut microbiome follows some life stage‐specific trends. This article provides a brief overview of how gut microbiome composition shifts across different phases of life. Created in BioRender. Özkurt, E. (2026) https://BioRender.com/8q4nrnc.

The negative existential cycle in Bantu

open access: yes, 2022
Renewal of negation has received ample study in Bantu languages. Still, the relevant literature does not mention a cross-linguistically recurrent source of standard negation, i.e., the existential negator.

Nomogram predicting macroscopic finding with limited or no clinical implication in 19175 patients referred to esophagogastroduodenoscopy

open access: yesCogent Medicine, 2016
Objective: The diagnostic yield of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) depends on appropriate patient selection. The aim of the current study was to create a nomogram predicting findings with limited or no clinical implication in patients referred to EGD ...

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.
