Negative Refraction in Indefinite Materials

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
Negative refraction is a fantastic optical property and attracts more and more attentions. As first proposed, materials with negative permittivity and negative permeability simultaneously exhibit negative refraction. Recently, negative refraction was found in the indefinite medium based on the strong anisotropy of permittivity.

On negative indefinites in Gallo

Lingvisticae Investigationes, 2018
AbstractThis paper brings to bear primary fieldwork data from Gallo on negation and polarity related issues. We defend two correlated proposals. (i) The negative markerspas/pouintin Gallo are not inherently negative, but rather merely signal the presence of abstract semantic negation in their clause.

Negative Refraction in Indefinite Permittivity Medium

Conference on Lasers and Electro-Optics 2010, 2010
We present theoretical calculations and experimental results demonstrating the negative refraction in indefinite permittivity medium based on SiO 2 -SiC- SiO 2 multi-layer structure. Also the enhancement of higher order Fourier harmonics has been experimentally shown.

Split Scope of Negative Indefinites

Language and Linguistics Compass, 2012
AbstractNegative indefinites, i.e. expressions like English nobody and no boy, give rise to split scope readings where another operator takes scope in between the negative and the indefinite meaning component. Split readings are puzzling under the standard analysis of negative indefinites as negative quantifiers.

Scandinavian Negative Indefinites and Cyclic Linearization

Syntax, 2011
.  In the Scandinavian languages, a [+negative] phrase must be licensed by Spec-head agreement in overt syntax, necessitating leftward movement of negative objects, Negative Shift (NegS). Although string-vacuous NegS is possible in all Scandinavian varieties, there is a considerable amount of crosslinguistic variation as to non-string-vacuous NegS.

Negative index and indefinite media waveguide couplers

Applied Physics A, 2007
We study the coupling interaction between dielectric waveguides and coupling elements made from negative-refracting media. The coupling configuration consists of a length of dielectric waveguide, which terminates either directly into or near a planar layer composed of the negative-refracting medium, and is followed by a second waveguide.

Negative indefinites and split-scope readings

2022
AbstractNegative indefinites (NIs) in languages such as Dutch and German may give rise to so-called split-scope readings. Sentences like German Du musst keine Krawatte anziehen (‘you must wear no tie’) have a reading where the modal takes scope in between the negation and the indefinite.

Negativity indices for definite and indefinite Sturm‐Liouville problems

Mathematische Nachrichten, 2010
AbstractVarious notions of indices for definite and indefinite Sturm‐Liouville problems are introduced and relations between them are investigated (© 2010 WILEY‐VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. KGaA, Weinheim)

Prosody and the meanings of English negative indefinites

Journal of Pragmatics, 2018
Abstract This paper investigates the acoustic correlates of single and Double Negation (DN) readings of English negative indefinites in question–answer pairs. Productions of four negative words (no one, nobody, nothing, and nowhere) were elicited from 20 native English speakers as responses to negative questions such as “What didn't you eat?” in ...
