Diagnostic testing in the context of high-value care: Incorporating prior probability [PDF]
This is the fifth article of a series on fundamental concepts in biostatistics and research. In this article, the author reviews the fundamental concepts in diagnostic testing, prior probability and predictive value, and how they relate to the concept of

The NlpC_P60 superfamily of peptidases is recognised by its key role in bacterial cell wall homeostasis. Recently, studies have also described the involvement of NlpC_P60‐like enzymes in bacterial competitive mechanisms and pathogenesis across several lineages.

The power of microRNA regulation—insights into immunity and metabolism
MicroRNAs are emerging as crucial regulators at the intersection of metabolism and immunity. This review examines how miRNAs coordinate glucose and lipid metabolism while simultaneously modulating T‐cell development and immune responses. Moreover, it highlights how cutting‐edge artificial intelligence applications can identify miRNA biomarkers ...

Derivation of Generalized Equations for the Predictive Value of Sequential Screening Tests [PDF]
Using Bayes' Theorem, we derive generalized equations to determine the positive and negative predictive value of screening tests undertaken sequentially. Where a is the sensitivity, b is the specificity, $\phi$ is the pre-test probability, the combined positive predictive value, $\rho(\phi)$, of $n$ serial positive tests, is described by: $\rho(\phi)

Introduction The role of small bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE) in Crohn's disease (CD) has expanded with greater understanding of the technology. The ability of SBCE to differentiate CD from other causes of inflammation has been questioned.

Accuracy of ultrasonography in the evaluation of abdominal masses in children in Nigeria
Introduction: Abdominal masses in children constitute a spectrum of lesions of diverse origin, nature and significance. In a low-income setting with limited investigative facilities, accurate diagnosis of abdominal masses can be very challenging. However,

The Saccharomyces cerevisiae amino acid transporter Lyp1 has a broad substrate spectrum
In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Yeast Amino acid Transporter family members mediate the import of amino acids, ranging from substrate specialists to generalists. Here, we show that the specialist transporter, Lyp1, has a broader substrate spectrum than previously described, with affinity constants spanning from micromolar to millimolar.

Negative 4-Probe Conductances of Mesoscopic Superconducting Wires [PDF]
We analyze the longitudinal 4-probe conductance of mesoscopic normal and superconducting wires and predict that in the superconducting case, large negative values can arise for both the weakly disordered and localized regimes. This contrasts sharply with the behaviour of the longitudinal 4-probe conductance of normal wires, which in the localized limit
