Quantifying Nighttime Gravity Wave‐Driven Mesosphere‐Ionosphere Coupling Over CONUS Using NASA AWE Radiance and GNSS TEC Observations

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract We present the first coordinated study of nighttime mesosphere‐ionosphere coupling over the continental United States (CONUS) from January through November 2024 using NASA Atmospheric Waves Experiment (AWE) airglow measurements near 87 km and GNSS Total Electron Content observations near 300 km.

Assimilation of 5G Base Station Networks as Ultra‐Dense Atmospheric Sensors for Advancing Heavy Rainfall Prediction

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract The zenith total delay (ZTD) retrieved from 5G communication base stations represents a novel observation source for numerical weather prediction (NWP), leveraging the extensive global deployment of 5G infrastructure. In this study, the direct assimilation of 5G‐ZTD observations into a high‐resolution NWP system was accomplished for the first ...

Coherent Turbulence Signatures Preceding Warm Rain Events From Collocated Cloud Radar and Wind Profiler Observations Across China

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, Volume 53, Issue 20, 28 October 2026.
Abstract Warm rain is plagued by a longstanding droplet growth bottleneck, one that turbulence may alleviate by enhancing droplet coalescence in the late condensation phase. Nevertheless, empirical observational support from multiple sites remains scarce. Here, we combine collocated nationwide millimeter cloud radars, radar wind profilers, Himawari‐8/9

Investigating Buoyant Plume Dynamics Induced by Localized Fire‐Simulated Heating Over Plant Canopies Using LES

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Atmospheres, Volume 131, Issue 19, 16 October 2026.
Abstract Plume interaction with a forest canopy results in flow features distinct from those in grasslands. Here, we model the turbulence dynamics of a buoyant plume in a homogeneous plant canopy with a crosswind using Large‐Eddy Simulations. As the plume interacts with the crosswind, we observe increased vorticity at the windward and tilted hair‐pin ...
