Dynamic Bending Model Describing the Generation of Negative Stiffness by Buckled Beams: Qualitative Analysis and Experimental Verification

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
This work addresses the dynamic modeling of a negative stiffness absorber consisting of an assembly of curved beams. Design rules are derived from the orders of magnitude of stiffness and elastic energy stored by the negative stiffness elements. Although

Mechanical design of negative stiffness honeycomb materials [PDF]

open access: yesIntegrating Materials and Manufacturing Innovation, 2015
AbstractA mechanical system exhibits negative stiffness when it requires a decrease in applied force to generate an increase in displacement. Negative stiffness behavior has been of interest for use in vibro-acoustic damping materials, vibration isolation mechanisms, and mechanical switches.

Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 increases metastatic potential and aggressiveness in colorectal cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Aldehyde dehydrogenase 1A1 (ALDH1A1) is a cancer stem cell marker in several malignancies. We established a novel epithelial cell line from rectal adenocarcinoma with unique overexpression of this enzyme. Genetic attenuation of ALDH1A1 led to increased invasive capacity and metastatic potential, the inhibition of proliferation activity, and ultimately ...

Mechanical Model and Seismic Response Analysis of a Track Type Combined Isolation Device

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
In view of the weak isolation and shock absorption effect of ordinary isolation bearings at present, a new track damping negative-stiffness device was designed based on the principle of negative stiffness.

A new Hysteretic Nonlinear Energy Sink (HNES)

open access: yes, 2017
The behavior of a new Hysteretic Nonlinear Energy Sink (HNES) coupled to a linear primary oscillator is investigated in shock mitigation. Apart from a small mass and a nonlinear elastic spring of the Duffing oscillator, the HNES is also comprised of a ...

RIPK4 function interferes with melanoma cell adhesion and metastasis

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
RIPK4 promotes melanoma growth and spread. RIPK4 levels increase as skin lesions progress to melanoma. CRISPR/Cas9‐mediated deletion of RIPK4 causes melanoma cells to form less compact spheroids, reduces their migratory and invasive abilities and limits tumour growth and dissemination in mouse models.

Effect of the curvature of the cross-section on buckling characteristics of convex-tape-shaped Cu-Al-Mn shape memory alloy elements

open access: yesMechanical Engineering Journal
When an elongated columnar shape memory alloy (SMA) element buckles, in some cases it exhibits negative stiffness. This post-buckling negative stiffness can be repeatedly used as SMAs can recover their shape.

The Aging Blood: Cellular Origins, Circulating Drivers, and Therapeutic Potential

open access: yesAging and Cancer, EarlyView.
As a conduit linking all organs, the blood system both reflects and actively drives systemic aging. This review highlights how circulating pro‐aging and antiaging factors and age‐associated hematopoietic stem cell dysfunction contribute to immunosenescence and multi‐organ decline, positioning the hematopoietic system as a target for aging intervention.

Physics, Tuning, and Performance of the TMD-Inerter for Harmonic Vibrations

open access: yesCivilEng
This paper analyzes the physics of the TMD-Inerter for harmonic vibrations. The basic TMD-Inerter layout is assumed, where the inerter is installed between the TMD mass and the structural mass. For harmonic vibrations, the inerter force can be formulated
