Coral Venom and Toxins as Protection Against Crown‐of‐Thorns Sea Star Attack
ABSTRACT Crown‐of‐thorns sea star (CoTS) outbreaks are a main cause of hard coral cover decline across the Indo‐Pacific, posing a major threat to the resilience of coral reefs. However, the drivers underlying CoTS feeding on preferred (e.g., Acropora species) versus non‐preferred (e.g., Porites species) are poorly understood. We hypothesised that coral

Epithelia are typically ciliated, except in sponges. Of all Porifera only Homoscleromorphs have motile cilia on their epithelia. Our data highlight the presence of cilia and mucociliary particle transport as a common feature of metazoa and a secondary loss in other sponge lineages.

Experimental Tools to Study Regeneration in the Sea Anemone Nematostella vectensis
Animal regeneration is a biological process leading to the reformation of injured or lost tissues/body parts. One of the most fascinating regenerative phenomena is the so-called whole-body regeneration, leading to the reformation of fully functional organisms within days after bisection.

Conservation and divergence of the "Nematostella vectensis" Smoothened Homolog [PDF]

In triploblastic animals, Par-proteins regulate cell-polarity and adherens junctions of both ectodermal and endodermal epithelia. But, in embryos of the diploblastic cnidarian Nematostella vectensis, Par-proteins are degraded in all cells in the ...

Plasticity in climate change responses
ABSTRACT Recent research has shown that climate change can both induce and modulate the expression of plastic traits but our understanding of the role of phenotypic plasticity as an adaptive response to climate change is limited. In this review, we dissect the mechanisms and impact of phenotypic plasticity as a response to accumulating climatic ...

Methylome Profiling of a Deuterostome Invertebrate Using Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT)
ABSTRACT DNA methylation is crucial for genome regulation and provides key insights into the interaction between genetics and environmental factors, offering valuable perspectives for ecological research. However, knowledge of DNA methylation patterns in nonmodel invertebrates remains limited.

Mechanosensitivity in the model sea anemone Nematostella vectensis [PDF]
Tentacles of the sea anemone, Nematostella vectensis, are covered with hair bundles. Hair bundles were deXected by water jets to test whether they are mechanoreceptors.
