Coronavirus as Agent of Neonatal Calf Diarrhea in Southern Chile* [PDF]
SummaryNeonatal calf diarrhea is one of the most serious problems of cattle industry all over the world. Although the aetiology is complex, it is possible to assess that viruses play a very important role.During an investigation to study the importance of Rotavirus in enteric problems in calves and piglets, it was possible to demonstrate the presence ...

Due to concerns about the human health impacts of agricultural antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance (AMR), alternatives to conventional antimicrobials are being sought. As a natural component of colostrum, lactoferrin has antimicrobial and anti-LPS capabilities and may have a role for the treatment of calf diarrhea.

Bovine Viral Diarrhea in the Neonatal Calf
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1974SUMMARY Bovine viral diarrhea (bvd) virus has been implicated in neonatal calf enteritis. Calves may become infected in utero or postnatally. In utero infection may terminate in abortion, cerebellar hypoplasia, birth of a weak calf, or clinically inapparent infection. Clinical signs in neonatal calves may include fever, leukopenia, nasal discharge, and

A study on neonatal calf diarrhea induced by rotavirus
Comparative Immunology, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, 1994This review summarizes the results of a study on rotaviruses isolated from calves affected by neonatal diarrhea. The results indicated that rotavirus infection is widespread and supported the evidence for an etiologic role of these viruses in neonatal diarrhea.

Pathophysiology of Neonatal Calf Diarrhea
Veterinary Clinics of North America: Food Animal Practice, 1985Neonatal calf diarrhea caused by bacterial enterotoxins, bacterial or parasitic-induced inflammation, or virus-induced villous atrophy leads to intestinal hypersecretion, malabsorption, or both. Mechanisms of secretion and malabsorption differ depending on the agent, suggesting that different modes of treatment must be employed to be effective ...

Immunity to Neonatal Calf Diarrhea Virus
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 1973SUMMARY The importance of local cellular resistance and circulating antibody in affording protection against calf diarrhea caused by a reovirus-like agent was evaluated, using experimental, clinical, and serologic data. Orally vaccinated experimental calves challenge inoculated 48 to 72 hours after vaccination remained normal.

Treatment of Neonatal Calf Diarrhea
American Association of Bovine Practitioners Conference Proceedings, 1980When it comes to talking about therapy of calf diarrhea, as clinicians, we are faced with a diagnostic dilemma. Generally, we don't know the exact cause of the diarrheal illness in terms of the type of bacterial or viral agent(s) involved. We don't know if bacteremia or septicemia is present or is imminent as far as the young neonate is concerned and ...

Prevention of Neonatal Calf Diarrhea with the Sandhills Calving System
American Association of Bovine Practitioners Conference Proceedings, 2004Neonatal diarrhea remains an important cause of illness and death of beef calves. Costs of the disease include loss of performance, mortality and the expense of medication and labor to treat sick calves. In addition, cattle producers often become disheartened after investing long hours to treat scouring calves during an already exhausting calving ...

Strategies for Controlling Neonatal Diarrhea in Cow-Calf Herds
American Association of Bovine Practitioners Conference Proceedings, 2006Undifferentiated neonatal diarrhea is an economically important cause of morbidity and mortality in beef calves. Understanding the multifactorial nature of neonatal calf diarrhea in cattle populations is the basis for developing strategies for prevention.
