Defining neonatal hypoglycaemia: A continuing debate
Seminars in Fetal and Neonatal Medicine, 2014Hypoglycaemia is one of the most frequent metabolic problems in neonatal medicine, and maintaining glucose homeostasis is one of the important physiological events during fetal-to-neonatal transition. Although frequently observed transient low blood glucose concentrations in the majority of healthy newborns are the reflections of normal metabolic ...

Hypoglycaemia in the Neonate: How and When Is It Important?
Developmental Neuroscience, 2010Cerebral metabolism is known to be highly dependent upon glucose utilisation. In the neonate, severe hypoglycaemia is now recognized to be associated with subsequent adverse neurodevelopment and in extremis glial and neuronal cell death. However, the level at which hypoglycaemia becomes clinically important is not well understood.

Neonatal hypoglycaemia: Clinical and legal aspects
Seminars in Fetal and Neonatal Medicine, 2005Transiently low blood glucose levels are common in the neonatal period and may be considered a normal feature of adaptation to extrauterine life. There is no evidence that this causes brain injury in the absence of concurrent clinical manifestations.
